Granite- poor seam?

Just got my first granite coutertop. i love it! but i think they did a terrible job with the seam. They come back tomorrow to cut my sink holes. I dont think this is fixable but I guess I wanted to get opinon and suggestions. The entire slab looks like it needed to be about 1/4” shifted (and there was plenty of slab to do that to make veins line up) and the seam seems raised and definately noticable to feel and sight. I love my slab, bot sure if we can find another two like this. Is asking for a discount appropriate? Would this seam turn potential fiture buyers off? This is from a highly spigjt after fabricator with great revoews, considered one of the best in my area.

Your granite fabricators have made a horrible mistake. They failed miserably at setting proper customer expectations. That's a terrific seam.

Thanks all, very very helpful info. Boxerpups, special thanks for these great photos, would never guess where the seams are in your counters. If things would work out so well for us, I would prefer they use caution with my handpicked slab and add a seam. You make a very good point about my confidence in the fabricator also. I think that must be the true source of my uneasiness. I do feel they are competent because they give all the right answers to questions (that I learned to ask from this forum), and they are well established in this area, but I just didn't click with the salesman and I only overlooked that because our contractor, who is wonderful, overall likes them. The owner also is great. So every time the salesman tells me something, I don't trust him. So I think what I will do is ask about their ability to hide seams and show them your photos if you don't mind--to give them an idea what our expectations are. Then I can put this to rest and move on. Thanks so much again everyone! And please stay tuned for backsplash questions, that is the next step!!

Haha, you folks are so awesome! You've really helped me to see the light and accept the perfection of imperfection. So, I called my granite guy yesterday after the unanimous results here and told him to keep the little jerk and that I'd learn to love it like only a father could. And to answer your question may_flowers, I seriously considered an apron sink at one point, but given the hackeration that would have to happen to my existing cabinetry and the added cost of the sink itself, I decided to go with a 60/40 Kraus SS from Amazon (again, thanks to GardenWeb recommendations). I got a wicked awesome 4th of July sale price on it too, as I was going to purchase on a Sunday night at $360, but woke up the next morning and got it for around $270! So anyways, my Samsung SS appliances arrived yesterday and the granite will be installed early next week. I'll post pics when the granite gets here so you all can see how everything turned out! Thanks again!

THANK YOU to everyone who helped me learn from this experience! There is so much knowledge (and willingness to spend time on graphics!) on this board! I'm very grateful. I didn't know what I didn't know...but I sure do now! I did not even know what "templating" really meant before. Lesson learned! My contractor has gotten involved and the manager of the granite fabricator has apologized and offered to make things right. They have one slab left from this lot. I'm going tomorrow to see if any part of it might provide a better match for the larger, L-shaped piece in question. Thanks to all of you I understand that it will not be a perfect match...but I'm grateful for the opportunity to see if there is the possibility of a better color blend. I'm so glad to have an idea of what my expectations should be. The smaller piece that is poorly color-matched was installed with the wrong ends touching. They're going to attempt to pull it out, turn it around, and re-install. That would have been avoided if they'd involved me in any part of the planning as they said they would! I was told that the small piece might break in their attempt to remove it, and the large remaining slab in this lot was rejected already by the fabricator as a poor match...but this is step one in their attempt to fix. I'm hopeful and going in with a positive attitude. It's only a countertop, right? That's what I keep telling myself... I've moved on to dealing with the backsplash tile that I selected to match my initial granite sample (which wound up not being the slabs they gave me...it was creamier/browner) that doesn't work with these countertops. Thank goodness they hadn't started to install the tile yet! I'm hoping my contractor will help absorb the restock fee for that tile (25%..is that normal?) since it's not like I just randomly changed my mind. These counters definitely don't look as good with my floors as the original slabs I selected. I'm just trying to keep things in perspective....and hope that maybe someday we can put in hardwood floors so the (old) floor tile that doesn't match isn't one more thing for me to kick myself about. This process can definitely be discouraging.

Rodding is old-school and is only necessary on very fragile stones or unusual situations. The problem is that many fabricators don't do it right. They use polyester instead of epoxy for bedding which isn't nearly as water resistant and cold steel instead of stainless or fiberglas rods which won't rust. I'm going to fix an exploded (oxidized) rod tomorrow. I hate it when they're in the back of the sink instead of the front. $800-$1,600.00 with no guarantee on appearance or durability and it's still a very cost effective alternative to replacement.

Yeah, that's a beautiful job!! Sorry but I agree your expectations are not realistic. You realize if they shifted it up, other parts of it wouldn't line up nearly as well as they do.

Why do ypu feel bad for them?? because their customer wasnt satisfied (since Ive never seen a geanite seam before and two people whove been in my home have said the seams are usually invisible) so I reached out for professional opinions before I raised a fit?? Wouldnt you feel bad for installers whose customers just throw a fit and not seek out help to know what is right and wrong?? Isnt this the whole purpose of discussion boards? There’s no need to try and humiliate me for not knowing and asking.

Seams are never invisible unless you use Corian. This is a beautiful seam and I would be very happy with it

You literally said you think they did a terrible job with the seam. Regardless of what people on this site say, its not like you’re going to give them the glowing reviews they deserve, even if you dont demand a discount like you had suggested.

Why do i feel bad for contractors? because for every person like you who is unjustly disappointed, someone else does in fact complain. And it takes time and effort and money for contractors to address those complaints, even if the customer is wrong. Which probably leads to higher costs for the rest of us, delays in our projects and other burdens we have to absorb to appease people with unrealistic demands.

No seams in any material are invisible, Corian included. There is only varying levels of inconspicuousness. It's the first thing they teach you on the first day of Corian school.

They’re full of it. That is not true even when you have a solid color granite like Absolute Black much less a stripey pattern like you have. And where does these two people’s expertise come from? Perhaps you were so negative when talking to them that they told you what they thought you wanted to hear.
