Decorating living room surfaces

I've never known what to put on top of my entertainment center and mantel. Please, don't suggest candles, books, or photos, as I have a bookcase decorated with these items. Any other ideas?

Sorry. This is my first time here. I figured out how to add the photos now. As for height, I'd guess both the mantel and the entertainment center are about five feet. Thanks.

Your views of the room are incomplete; we need to see the seating and the TV in relation to each other, with views from various points of the room. Views of the upper part of the room are rather immaterial because you won't be decorating up there. There's a lot you can do with wall art which should be of good quality because it will go with you no matter when or where you move.

Yes, arrangement looks much better!! If you are anxious to paint, you could roll out the Natural Wicker, as you are going to need a primer anyway over that deep paint. Won't hurt to use is as basically a primer. I can't really recommend a paint until you are finished with the room. Your next step will be chairs, lamps, end tables, lamps (I would get a nesting coffee table or oval), art and drapes (which are too short).

I would like to begin saying that I love the minimalist aesthetic you have. I’m a less is more person and I don’t like random artwork for the sake of filling walls. With that said, I’d like to see more color warmth on the walls. The buttery white is making it too stark. Have you considered painting? I would try the sectional against the buffet wall to free up the window, and add your teal accents into the window treatment. Eliminate the glass table or move it between the chairs. Add more unique floor lamp lighting near the couch. The buffet can then be moved to the kitchen wall.

The rug is the wrong orientation in relation to sectional. Rotate the sectional so the chaise is on the fireplace wall. Or pull the sectional back, center it on the fireplace, and rotate the rug to center on the fireplace. And remove the pieces from in front of the fireplace so the rug can be closer to it. Can you separate the sectional into two pieces facing each other, one under the window and one on the wall -- and rotate the rug down the middle between them. That woud be ideal...you could see more of the rug. And get bold artwork for the long wall that will compliment the bold rug. My suggestion for your mantel would be to hang a large piece of artwork you love and nothing on the mantel. It's hard to recommend something on the entertainment center without knowing the style you like or what else is in the room. Maybe a large vase/vessel of some sort with tall leafy branches to fill some of the vertical space?
More suggestions might come in if you add more information, like pictures of the rest of the room and what your decorating style is.

My home is very traditional, camelback sofas, wingback chair, brass lamps, and an oriental rug to pull everything together. The color scheme is dark red, sage green, and a golden color if that helps.

Do you like fabric art like quilts, or maps. or other things related to history? Do you want something on the wall or prefer things sitting on the mantle or entertainment unit? Would you like real plants there?

I am looking for something to sit on TOP of the entertainment center and mantel, not on the wall. I don't do live plants.

Without seeing the rest of the room, it’s hard to tell what would look best. Think larger rather than smaller, so big art and not small knickknacks. I’m a fan of modern art with traditional furniture for a more eclectic, less cookie cutter look but that’s just me. A landscape painting or large mirror over then mantle (depending on what it reflects) could work nicely as well. I also agree with the commenter above that a large vessel with branches would add some height to your decor. Please stay away from a gallery wall and word art.

Nothing on the mantel - switch out the dated wall piece that you currently have above the fireplace for a large, colorful piece of art; for the entertainment center, do something like this on one side and then leave the rest of the top empty
