The lack of a defined bed edging makes perennial beds look messy
Comments (29)Flora, That looks great! I have behind my barn, 6000+ bricks. I was thinking of laying a border of them side by side (vs. end to end) for the lawn mower. However, one of the things that has prevented me from edging anything with anything but Round-Up, is that I have 3 acres of beds. As it is, right now the only chemical I use at all is Round-Up. I fight poison ivy, so I always have it. I simply sprayed the edges of my beds so I could mow on the dead edge. The mulch is mounded up abruptly, so there is a defined edge of the garden. The Round-Up creates kind of a no-man's land. Unfortunately, although it does a good job of keeping the weeds and grass from growing into the beds, it's not the prettiest at all. I love the idea of the edging + the bricks/stones. I might become a little OCD about this and try one of my smaller beds. That'll only be maybe 150' x 15 to 30' wide! Oh - and for anyone who is looking for bricks? Don't forget Freecycle. People have all this stuff stacked up behind their houses.... Christine...See MoreWould you put something over this bed?

I thought her arrangement was brilliant when I saw it drawn out, but I would switch the dressers. I like aktillery's mock up, with the mirror behind the lamp and the way she has the curtain panel, it doesn't look bad, either with or without the curtain. I don't really like heavy items above a headboard, like the star mirror. My thought it this: if the piece does come loose from the wall, will it fall straight down behind the bed? or will it get stuck in the head board and possibly break or bounce off of it -that's why I believe that anything over a head board should not stick out too much. The last thing I want is to do wake up in a dark room with shattered mirror on my face. And even if it is cemented in place and no chance of falling in an earthquake, It is still that visual calamity about to happen that I find too unsettling in a bedroom. I would switch the chests of drawers. First of all I would put the long drawers to the left of the bed where it was, I think it would look less imposing when you came in. The tall high boy can go against the wall ('opposite' the bed to right as you enter) but if I put a dresser there I would center it on the wall. The tallboy could go back where it was beside the window, because I think it balanced the windows nicely. In that case you can leave the doggie bed on the 'opposite' wall, but perhaps introduce a small bench or stool, to sit when you put your socks on. I don't mind if art doesn't match the textiles in the room. If you love the birch paintings, I think they would be lovely and all the more better for not being matchy matchy. Art shouldn't be chosen because it matches a room, the room should support the art. But I also like the idea of the surreal landscape, it could be very calming....See MoreHelp the decorating the wall over my master bed

I would put 2 or 3 prints with a white matte above the bed and then an oversized art piece in a framed canvas on the wall across from the bed. the websites minted and great big canvas are great places to find art....See MoreGritty Mix or Other Soil Mixes in Raised Beds Connected to the Ground
Comments (16)I'm a total amateur with succulents in the ground. When we moved into this house 4 years ago, we wanted to do something different than the lawn/boxwood that everyone in this fancy schmancy neighborhood has! We had to be a bit careful as it is an historical neighborhood, so we started with our hellstrip. We went to the local landscape materials place and told them we wanted to plant succulents. They gave us a 1/2&1/2 mix of soil and sand. It's been great! We've had many compliments from the neighbors, so we added an island in the middle of the lawn using the same 1/2 71/2 mix (also had the lawn guy adjust the sprinklers so they don't hit that area) Many more compliments! We're hoping to eventually be sprinkler free and teach our lawn guy more about lawn free yards! And learn more ourselves as we are in yet another drought here in California!...See MoreGhows Sadayan
