Slab Marble or Subway Tile Backsplash
Comments (13)I'm assuming the weight is factored in. We are using a popular, high-end kitchen designer. Then again, is there an issue with using a slab? The kitchen plan has two sides/walls with an island - so an L shape. The side with the range and upper cabinets will be completely covered by the marble slab but the other side/wall of the kitchen, which is directly across from the island, doesn't have cabinets and we would only be extending the marble up to be even with the end of the cabinets on the range wall. I guess one of my issues is I don't know if it is worth in to spend that much when the main accent wall is at an angle, rather than in direct view of the island seating and dining room table. Also, I think I would be saving a ton by using even a high end marble subway tile....See MorePics of marble subway done (grout dried)
Comments (53)Hi worldmom - thank you! The fixture is from Rejuvenation but I'm sorry that I don't know its name! I only got that fixture temporarily (got it in person since they're local) so my electrician could see what would be used canopy-wise (same canopy size as the one that's coming in the mali that had to be special ordered). The electrician made a hole off-center in the ceiling and it was supposed to be centered and he was moving things a bit so needed a canopy to know what's what. He misunderstood me and installed it so I have to unscrew it and return it soon! I like the George one! The one I'm getting is the kind that instead of hanging by a rod, is hanging by a black cloth-covered cord. I'm doing a polished nickel canopy and socket and a glass white shade (cone style, kind of wide). The fixture I'm getting is called Willis. The shade I'm getting isn't on their website but is in the store. It looks like the one in the link I'll put here only it doesn't have lines etched in it. Not sure if the link will look (I did the customizing thing in which you play around with the pictures - fun huh!)... Here is a link that might be useful: The light fixture I have coming in the mail, only my shade won't have lines etched in it...See MoreShower Tile Lippage
Comments (28)I'm going to make a couple of unpopular statements here, so let me first start that no matter what, this is unacceptable and should be done over.... WITH A DIFFERENT TILE, or using a leveling system. First, you're shining a light right down the face of the tile, and even an acceptable tile job will look horrendous doing that. It's what's called "washed lighting" and there are very specific recommendations out from the TCNA concerning permanent installation of washed lighting with tile installations. Second-- I don't care WHOSE tile you use. narrow elongated tiles like these will be bowed, and if installed without a leveling system, will give the "basket weave" appearance that you see in the pics above. Sometimes, especially with porcelain tiles, you can take that bow out. Other times, especially with wall tiles that won't flex much, you can't, and then the only way to install them is with a 25% broken joint or even better, soldier coursing (normal grid pattern). One way or the other, the bottom line is the installer AND the person who sold you this tile, should have informed you before the tile was installed that this would happen, and recommend either less of an offset, or going with a different tile....See MoreLippage - about to begin tiling.
Comments (18)Yikes.... I wouldnt waste your time taping off grout joints. The glazed wall tile (in your original pic will clean up nicely. The floor Tile should be pretty easy to clean as well unless it has a texture or grooves in it. You can grout the faces of a sample tile to see how easy it is to clean. If in doubt you could Pre-seal the tile before you grout. Dont use additives much so can’t give you feedback on that. The laticrete product mentioned I have used before and works well. but mostly my suppliers carry Mapei and Custom brands of grout. For cement based grout I like Custom Prism or Mapei Ultracolor. Both are color consistent and fast setting. Both work well if installed following manufacturers instructions....See Morekculbers
