small budget/big containers for the fairgrounds
Comments (5)This is probably not the answer you were hoping for but what about "offering" the containers or pairs of containers (already filled with container mix) to county scout troops, garden clubs, vo-tech school groups, 4-H clubs, etc with a budgeted amount for materials. You could offer medal or ribbon awards for the best in many categories - for example containers for shade, edibles, whimsy, best use of color. Or you could establish a theme pertaining to local events, an element of community pride, the area's development goals - anything to engage imagination. Locally, a small shopping district challenged its main street businesses to paint and plant containers to be placed outside their shops. Many of the shop owners got really involved, painting "mini-murals" on the sides of the containers and planting with coordinating designs. The effect was beautiful and the best, most innovative containers were pictured in the local newspaper. Just a thought! Good luck Pat in PA...See MoreNeed ideas for a rose planting container
Comments (13)Thanks for videos, I finally got them. Now I know why I never peg them to the ground- no room I live in the city! I like rooting my own roses too. I got a poor sick rose from K-Mart knowing it probably wouldn't survive but it was cheap & I always wanted an "Angel Face" rose,it didn't have the 3 branches coming out above the graft like it should have. I babied it along for several years but never did too well. Last winter I trimmed it back & just stuck the thickest piece in the ground & forgot about it. Now I have a healthy new rose. I usually put cinnamon on the cut end I stick in moist ground but didn't with it. My dad could throw anything in a bucket put some water in it & stuff would grow. I have to put it in the ground. Oh, out here they always tell you that cane needs to be cut off even with the bottom of base of rose. He left his sticking up! I also seal the area with Elmer's Glue-All so I don't get rose borer's going in the fresh cut wood! It's cheap & quick! Waterproof after it dries too!Jan...See MoreRose beginner needs advice on container roses
Comments (19)I have 18 roses in containers. My climber is in a 15 gallon plastic container and the rest are hybrid tea roses in 5 and 6 gallon containers (5 gallon plastic and what I am calling 6 gallon are terra cotta pots that are bigger than 5 gallons but not by much - they could be 7 gallons). My roses started bare root (with 2 exceptions - 1 pulled from the ground and 1 purchased already potted) 6 years ago. Obviously it's better to have a bigger pot, but I haven't had major problems with this size pot. I have changed the soil once so far just to keep it fresh. I fertilize every other week at 1/2 strength with liquid fertilizer similar to Miracle Gro and once per month I fertilize with fish emulsion and an organic slow-acting fertilizer like alfalfa meal, blood meal, or Grow More. I never apply all of this on the same day, so that usually means a schedule similar to: Wednesday Week 1 Organic granular fertilizer Saturday Week 1 Weak liquid fertilizer Saturday Week 2 Weak liquid fertilizer Wednesday Week 2 Spray fungicide Saturday Week 3 Weak liquid fertilizer Wednesday Week 3 Fish emulsion Saturday Week 4 Weak liquid fertilizer Wednesday Week 4 Spray fungicide (I try to do the nasty things like spray chemicals and smelly fish emulsion during the week so that my neighbors and I don't have to deal with it when we are BBQing and the like on the weekends.) I spray for insects when they become a problem, except that I do proactively spray all of my buds with spinosad because thrips are the bane of my existence. For instance, I don't think I sprayed an insecticide at all last year. Most years I end up spraying maybe twice. I don't want to kill the praying mantis and hover flies that I get. Fungicide is a different story and I spray every other week (the week I do not fertilize). I use Immunox alternated with Mancozeb/Banner Maxx. When I do use an insecticide I use one mixed with yet a different fungicide just to switch it up. That's about it. Here in CA I usually prune in January, although I pruned in February this year. We usually get 3 flushes per year, although I had 4 this year with the mild weather. The biggest challenge I face growing roses in containers is keeping them watered. A rose in the ground can withstand even the fiercest heat for a few days between waterings. My container roses need to be watered every day when the temperature is above 90 degrees and when it's 100+ sometimes I water them twice if they look sad when I get home from work. If I miss a day the roses don't die, but the new growth gets crispy and the flowers I work so hard for burn up. Luckily, this is usually just for a couple of weeks in July or August. Otherwise, I water 2-3x per week. Right now with the rain I am watering just 1x to supplement Mother Nature....See MoreIdea needed for a tight budget!!!!!!
Comments (12)Okay, I picked out a dress. Took my mother with me then went and got future mother-in-law and asked her opinion. Found ANOTHER dress and ended up getting it. Not quite the style I was looking for but it looks great. I will post a picture this weekend. So, now its the room. I wanted to have the reception and wedding in the same place. Too tacky? One room is not all that big. Not too sure how to work that. But I love the food there, (its the room I first told you about) The other room is much bigger, big enough for both. Can have chairs and tables set up and seperate. Same price for room, a little cheaper on food, can have everything I want. But afraid of the food not being good, square or oblong tables, and a pool table off to side. And he is not helping at all, he says I choose, its whatever I want. So basically I need to know is it TOO tacky to have everything in same room? We wont be using the bike as we live in Ohio and wont know until that day if the weather will be nice enough. I moved here from Florida, so I dont ride at all unless its at least 70*. My cake topper and our glasses are coming from HD. His shirt etc etc, they have a nice wedding dress but its long tight and leather. Besides cake we have to have pie too, as there will be diabetics there. Want to make sure they feel welcome and wanted and can enjoy themselves. Its nice to hear from somebody that can "see" black and orange beyond Halloween. My mom seems to be making a joke out of it though. My house isn't black and orange. But we met because of HD. And we have always had one....See MoreHolly Webster(7bNC)
