Marvin Windows Installation

Hi I had Marvin Ultimates installed recently and there is significant canting as you can see from the photo. I’ve tried adjusting the arms by using the adjustable wrench:

The window is still canted. My contractor claims it is a window issue but i have a very hard time believing that.

Are there other adjustments the contractor can make to the window?

A brand new window should not need the hinge adjusted. Have the Marvin service tech out to have a look.

The window is also scraping on the bottom of the sash.

I think the Marvin salesperson doesn't know squat in this case. Without knowing what your existing windows are, his/her advice is complete bunk. What are your current windows (wood, vinyl, metal, etc.)?

Thanks willtv for the detailed information. I'm guessing the pricing in Long Island tends to be higher than the rest of the country. Still, it seems like you got a lot for $27K, especially since a French door can easily run $4K+ installed. I'm also looking at Marvin's Integrity line, which is fiberglass exterior and wood interior. We will need a wood look for the interior of our house (or at least, not white). While the Infinity fake wood ("Everwood") looks pretty good and is stainable, it's still a laminate over the fiberglass.

Your experience with Marvin packing appears to be the same as mine. I would guess these windows are casements. Of the 25 windows ordered I had three casements. The casements were inadequately protected and all three had damage similar to yours. At first Marvin insisted upon using a little touch up paint. I rejected that idea. I paid for the best finish in the industry and I refuse to have a touch-up via rattle can. I rejected the windows and they sent new replacement frames. Marvin needs to improve up the packaging for Casements. The best window company has some serious problems with packing. This is such a simple remedy but yet they appear to be cutting cost in an important area. All of the double hung windows were packaged well and protected on all corners and edges, both sides. No damage on them. It befuddles me that they ship their casements windows so haphazard and there double hung windows so well. My recommendation: review the window condition closely upon arrival. Reject windows where the metal is exposed no matter how small. You paid for factory fresh and you should receive factory fresh.

Dennisgli: I am looking at Marvin or Andersen. It was a Marvin dealer that suggested using their own installers. However, when I was at Home Depot looking at Andersen, they were promoting their own installers bacause they would apply additional warranties through Home Depot and because "Home Depot will be here longer than Andersen Windows!" This leads to the obvious question that if in 20 years Andersen is gone, how will anyone at all have access to material to fix an Andersen window? I am looking at Marvin, Marvin Integrity, and Andersen 400 windows. We need to replace casement windows, and we have to match the wood look inside the house with a colonial type grill. The whole window will be replaced. Currently we have custom made windows from 1994 that are failing, and the math shows it will be too expensive to repair and renovate the old windows. Actually if I were 25 years younger and had better DIY skills, I would try the repair myself. Many of the double pane lites are failing, and the experts tell me that 20 years is the lifetime and the failures will just increase.

I repeat, have the dealer send out Marvin service before your adjusting things make it worse. Are you sure the window is installed 100% correct?

I dont know. The contractor is blaming the window. My adjusting improved it so I can at least close the window but it feels very tight still. I hope Marvin is better to deal with than my contractor.

I cannot say for sure but my bet is it is not installed properly as I am yet to hear of a Marvin or any other quality window that needed the hinges adjusted upon initial installation.

Are these casements? Does that go away once you engage the lock/latch? Most multi-point locking casements have a progressive action where the bottom catches first and the lock subsequently pulls the rest of the panel in to seal.

If that is not the answer, it could be product OR install related. The general rule is that install is far more likely, but these days with the manufacturing issues across the industry a product issue could very well be a possibility as well.

The best next step is to follow MWM's advice and have a Marvin service rep come out and take a look.

My first thought is a bad install, especially after seeing the scraping on the bottom sash. I would have Marvin come out cause they will be able to speak to either issue(s); bad install and/or window adjustments.

Yep I’m having the Marvin rep come tomorrow to inspect. The installer cant figure it out (which doesnt give me faith in the other windows he installed now).
