Rug types and sizes in open dark entryway?
I have no idea what to do for rugs in my entry (how many and what size)! I want a mat at the door for wet boots, snow and mud but want to also have a rug to define and warm up the space (something light colored to brighten space cause of my I-so—regret dark floors!). Ignore white rug in middle i was attempting to brighten area.
My 6ft wide entry opens right up into short hallway and kitchen so I need to break up and define the space. i am thinkiing a 3x5 mat at the door and then immediately followed by a 4x6 jute or neutral rug in front
of bench? It is a high traffic area that has entry to living room on right and bedroom hallway on left
i need advixe on how to brigjten up and define the space!

Comments (14)I agree with all the advice to improve your lighting, no matter which approach you take. If you install a new light fixture, be sure you get one that really pours a lot of functional light into that space. Whatever you do, don't pick a color before you decide on lighting. Choosing colors, or anything design related for that matter, often involves a compromise between aesthetics and function. I understand you are worried that a color color will not work with the rest of the white in your home. My big fear is that those walls, if they work aesthetically with the rest of the house, are going to be a source of stress for you, given the amount of abuse they will likely receive. There is no better example than yours for my color mantra "Decorate in the Color of Dirt." Mudrooms, garages, sunrooms, porches, dog-washing rooms (yes...people do have those!) should ideally be colored to closely resemble the dirt in one's neighborhood, especially the floors. One could make the same case when considering wall colors. In Georgia, where clay reigns supreme, the floors should include at least a smidge of red. In Florida, sand is the guideline. You get the picture... Of course, if you won't be unhappy with messy walls or don't mind cleaning those walls regularly, you have my blessing to paint whatever color you like, including white. In my house, the dirt rules. My floors are mid-tone browns and the mudroom floor is swirly gray marmoleum. It's almost scary what that mudroom floor can hide! ;-) My mudroom walls are a blue gray...not perfect, but certainly more forgiving than white. Fortunately, there are a lot of gorgeous neutrals out there that kind of look like dirt. Read through some of the threads on beige, gray beige, taupe and griege...the kinds of colors Jessica mentions above. The only problem with two colors, one on top and one below, is that it breaks up the space and makes for more visual information, which can lead to visual clutter. In an area already full of stuff, I would encourage you to reduce the visual stimulation, not increase it. In fact, one trick I like to use in a small hallway with lots of doors is to paint out everything in the wall color. Comments (3)THE RULE Is don't make a second post!! Go to a real carpet store, ask to see stair runners that come in 36 inch widths.Have it made to the length you need and backed with non skid. Or look at area rugs in 3 x 5 for the entry if that fits.. No doormat sizes. Ready made runners will be too narrow for your space No to the rug under table. You need an 8 x10 and I doubt that fits. Comments (13)Yes, Ashraf, I think that would work too & you could then have a deeper table.. You’ll want to keep the table legs off rug & table should be maybe no wider than that entry window including the casing around window. For the rug I suggest setting up a visual aid. Either tape out on the floor the exact size of rug or use a folded sheet or bath towels. I find that so helpful Also,be aware that most area rug measurements aren’t quite exact & some measurements include any fringe on rug ends. Comments (5)Hi Kate. Looks like a beautiful home. I would not use a long runner, as it will either be off center of the front door or the flex room, which will feel awkward. 2 years agoEven with a mat to pick up the worst of the mud and wet, a jute rug or anything light will quickly be marked with visible stains you won’t be able to wash away. A vividly patterned rug with darker tones and a design that will dissapate the appearance of scuffs and stains can be lively and ”bright”

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoPresuming you have an excellent doormat outisde the door, how about putting a large area rug you like to be underfoot right as guests walk in, a rug that would be positioned where you currently show that light gray rug as people walk in, but much much larger. Create the space so that someone walking in has immediately to the left a neat tidy place to get rid of a wet jacket, umbrella or hat. And it’s a comfortable space for two people to stand, turn around, with the rug underfoot.
Then think about adding a different round rug between the 2 closet doors in the short space of hallway leading to the kitchen. Take away that console table with the plant. Hang art on the walls instead or a mirror with a thin floating shelf.
Let’s say you picked a round bright colored rug for the space closer to the kitchen. Would a square or rectangular entry rug like these work for you?

2 years agoI had thought about the large rug-only option but being in Canada i really need a mat at door for kids and boots. I will be putting up hooks and a mirror above bench and colorful art above console (if kept there). my main issue is regretting the dark ceramic floor. i have trouble looking past it and hate them. Your last picture of mud room mostly gave me floor envy!
Here is a picture with only large mat at door (4x6ish camel color LLBean waterhog mat). Then with a second 4x6 i have - likely need option with colour if second rug is a viable option.
