The biggest problem with HVAC zone systems is knowing when to choose it as a solution and when not to. Some HVAC companies it's about "sell, sell, sell" whether or not it works... there's more money in "sell, sell, sell" --- when it's only about money? So does the comment above mean I do it for free? No. If you think that you are reading things that aren't there. New construction? best to choose separate systems 9 times out of 10. In order for a zone system to work, you have to know what you are doing. Most HVAC companies staff (the techs they send you) are 20-30 year olds. How much practical experience could they possible have? It's best for HVAC zone systems to be an elegant solution. A HVAC zone system is a tool in the tool bag. Not all homes are suitable for zone systems. Some homes there is no other way, and in some cases complications to those problems will make an HVAC zone system design possibly more prone to problems. You have a problem now, do you want more problems. These decisions among others are decided "in person" --- so considering that becareful what information you decide upon from the internet. Just because it's here doesn't necessarily mean it's true. That said: Depending on equipment level chosen, how many different floors you have in your structure, how much room you have available... will all be factors that make you decide one way or another. There are extra costs to move a HVAC system. If the system is all electric it's a tad bit easier. If it's gas, it's more complicated and costs are higher. When you relocate the HVAC you have to relocate all the connections, duct work, flue pipe, gas piping, electrical, air returns etc. Because this is a design related question, yes it can be done but it is best done from a blank slate meaning when the structure is built or take everything out and redesign the entire system duct work, everything. That can be quite costly. So if your plan is to build a new structure the costs are even higher because you also have the costs of the new structure to contend with. If you're not prepared with the costs of redesigning the entire HVAC system and just move it without considering design implications the next extended heat wave or cold snap may prove unbearable. It's one thing for a HVAC system to operate in 80 degree weather or 50 degree weather --- it's quite another for it to work in 100+ degree weather or -40 below zero wind chills. I don't consider HVAC contractors--whether they're performing installation or service to be a lower life form. @Charles Ross Homes: Installers are rarely considered HVAC contractors. To be a HVAC contractor in most states and localities requires an HVAC License. In my case that HVAC License took me roughly 13 years to obtain for a variety of reasons. Currently that span of time makes about half my total career in this field. Lower life form: Knowledge is what separates amateurs from professionals. A good amount of knowledge is attained by experience. (doing it). This has nothing to do with being a lower life form. I realize after the fact how I stated that comment how it could be misconstrued as to what my role as an Licensed HVAC contractor truly is. As an example skill sets in how most HVAC companies are run: From highest to lowest Skill sets refer to what the title has the knowledge to perform. This doesn't mean you are a 'lower life form'. Distance Between Supply and Return Vents. https://www.cooling-heating.net Do not place your supply register and the return vents too close together. The air needs time to circulate around the room and do its job. If the return vent is too close or if the supply register is right next to the door, the air may slip away without actually heating the room. Keep the two separate.
