Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help! Kitchen Remodel design

I'm a little burnt out selecting finishes for our kitchen remodel. Will you help? I'm listing what we have and what we still need to select.

Cabinets - Shaker cabinets painted Repose Gray

Floor: 3 1/4" Armstrong Prime Harvest Oak (Color: Forest)

Sink: 32" Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse sink

Appliances - stainless steel (Wolf range, Bosch dishwasher, GE Cafe fridge)

Microwave - small countertop microwave for shelf next to fridge

Need to decide on:

Countertop - thinking London Sky Quartz

Backsplash - thinking simple white subway tile with light gray grout. Tile will cover entire sink wall to ceiling (Daltile from home depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Daltile-Restore-3-in-x-6-in-Ceramic-Bright-White-Subway-Tile-12-5-sq-ft-Case-RE1536MODHD1P4/302575146#overlay) with light warm gray grout

Pendant/lights over sink window? Should I do library lights coming off the wall or a glass pendant. See note below about dining room chandelier.

Pendants over peninsula? I'm not sure if we should do pendants over our small peninsula. The peninusla juts out into the dining room, where we have this gorgeous chandelier (I LOVE this chandelier): https://www.crystorama.com/calypso-6-light-crystal-teardrop-bronze-chandelier_5568.aspx?EID=1432&EN=Category#.YLpJZy1h1QI. So I'm thinking if we do pendants over the peninsula, something very simple, like two rounded glass pendants.

I *think* this covers the major decisions I have left. I'd love your help deciding on these items!!!

please please wait on the backsplash, i wouldnt even entertain it, until the kitchen is done... too many mistakes...

love brass hardware with cabinet choice, but it doesnt have to be those if they dont fit your budget

these are my favorite favorite style hardware, yes almost the same price... buuuut, you can do this on some of the uppers, and have cheaper pulls or knobs

i like the library style lamps over a pendant...

You started off on the wrong foot. You needed to start off with a Kitchen Designer who would then give you referrals for good quality contractors to create the vision that you two created. Starting with a contractor doesn’t even give you a decent overview of costs as without design specifications, they have nothing to go by to know if you were planning on a standard 64K mid grade semi custom kitchen or a standard 130K upgraded kitchen with built in appliances and custom cabinets. You need a design first to even have an intelligent conversation with contractors about the work needing to be done. Find a Kitchen Designer and pay a retainer to work with them.

“That mix of grease and dust was the worst cleaning job I've ever had. I would never design a gap between cabinets and ceiling, unless I felt positive I would always have the money to pay a cleaning service.” @mcarroll16 - it sounds like there was no proper hood exhaust in your parents’ kitchen. I have 9’ ceilings, and on one wall the cabinets meet the ceiling, and on another wall I have 42” upper cabinets, 3” crown and a gap to the ceiling. I place wax paper up there (it’s the perfect width) to collect any dust or grease that might float up there, and twice a year, when I change smoke alarm batteries, I pick up the wax paper and put down new. Many times I just leave the wax paper there because it is so clean it does not need to be changed. I have a good hood exhaust. With a good hood exhaust, you would not have had such a cleaning chore in your parents’ home. It is quite expensive to take cabinets to meet a 9’ or 10” ceiling. Many people would rather invest in a good hood and correct ductwork for it. Indoor air quality is more important than ever these days.

IMO you need an independant kitchen designer right now . What happens here usually is you come with the design and we critique it . Do not use a cabinet sales person to design your kitchen , I have a 1956 MCM ranch house that we totally gutted except for the huge fireplace which I came to love. These houses have great spaces and that is what I love about them so get someone who loves this style of home it will pay for it self over and over. I actually traded the DR and kitchen spaces in my house to get the kitchen I wanted so take your time to do this so it respects the house and works for you. BTW I love corner windows so MCM. I am not seeing the whole house plan but do not see a DR maybe if you have one use the nook area for the kids if they are small. I happen to love galley kitchens and I do not like kitchens open to LRS. This is apic of one kitchen I did for client and where you see the pendants was one of those typical 1950's cabinets doubled side glass and wall cabinets along the window wall with a much better choice for storage I removed all of those cabinets and made the space so much better the penisula where the pendants are is now open to the DR Please get a good KD

certified kitchen designers in a rather local kitchen design center. seems like perhaps this level is not something you are aware of. Ought not be a big box store...you dont need to head to a General contractor right yet. When you say remodeler makes me think you may not be aware of the "certified kitchen designer" level of pro. they can design/assist w particulars/ sell you all the cabinets and refer the plan just to you if you want to arrange your own bidding for the labour [ a large part of this] but they most likely have a referral process to arrange demo and install as well. Try to figure out your budget. Have you visited a kitchen design center......they invite browsing and general conversation as you think over what you want to do.

Littlemissdena, do you mean wait until cabinets and counters are installed befire deciding on backsplash? wont the backsplash influence what counters we do?

Also, just realized I have something else I help deciding: the kitchen faucet!

The counters will influence the backsplash, not vice versa. Plus it's much harder to change countertops in a few years whereas a backsplash is relatively easy to replace if you want to do something different in time.

Also meant to say that I just ordered a faucet for our reno from Signature Hardware. I looked at options from several manufacturers but was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very high-quality for less money than a lot of the other options.

I agree that the backsplash can wait. I've always waited until everything else is done to look for tile (unless you're planning to use your countertop material). Like you, I usually have burn out before choosing tile so I find it better to wait.

I really like library lights and think two would look great over your large window. But because I've never had them I can't say for sure that they throw off enough light. I'm sure someone else can advise on that. FWIW, I think your layout looks great and love the cork board!
