Julia Child color not yellow

Is it notmal for the Julia Child rose to not bloom in yellow?

my plant is on its own root, 3 years in the garden .

first year it had yellow blooms but not any longer.

i have no complaints as the blooms are beautiful shade of pale peach and she blooms non stop.

just wondering if it has something to do with my soil in zone 6b.

there is a rose forum or two .. lets hope those peeps find this post here ...

i would not expect a soil issue to completely change flower color so completely .. nor a plant to thrive as you describe with such a severe soil condition ... and if your soil is so out of whack.. do you see any other plants in the garden affected by the soil???

and i would not expect understock of grafted roses.. to have such a flower display ...

are you sure someone isnt messing with you.. and replanted a different rose in the same spot ... lol

ps: are you properly watering julia with the appropriate cooking sherry??? .. a little for me.. a little for the pot.. a little more for me... etc ....

thanks Ken...managed to pick wrong forum. i opened the rose group and created a new post. but as i was prompted to tag while submitting, opted for garden as i couldnt find rose.

May be sherry sharing affect...

will see if i can transfer to correct discussion group.

i have a sage which is always trying to swallow the rose. both were planted the same year....i blame the sage for my rose transformation.

Elina/Peaudouce is very robust in Illinois---I've seen huge specimens of it growing in several gardens I've visited north of I-80. It's healthy & hardy. Don't believe the HMF classification of 7b; I believe 5 is more appropriate. That being said, it may not be exactly what you're looking for. It's not the glamour gal that Julia Child is. Elina is a very subdued yellow and whenever I've seen it, I'd call it more "off-white". I grow St Patrick instead, which I've heard can be a stretch for my zone, but it's doing fine. What do other folks think about that rose if she's going to overwinter it in a garage? If bright yellow & double form are the criteria, it fits.....but it's not as strongly scented as Elina.

Make sure you have excellent drainage from the container. If the drain holes are getting plugged, the soil will stay too wet and eventually rot the roots. We had the same thing happen to a tree rose in a container. When I freed up the drain holes it was like a river coming out the bottom.

I can't speak about Mellow Yellow but can't help jumping in here to give a big shout out to Julia Child. I just got Julia in the spring due to so many on this board praising her and I totally agree that she's amazing. I have to spray my rses but JC has been clean all summer, blooms constantly and just thrives when the rest are tuckered out from the drought, heat, etc. I can't wait to see how she thrives in the next few years if she has done this well the very first.

Thanks Happy Child is in flower at least 300 days of the year for me. New shoots and buds are seen at all stages of development at any time you look at this rose. I no longer grow Friesia as it is not vigorous enough for me and the flowers don't last in my heat. If you like Julia Child you must see Diane's (nanadoll). She has the best Julia Child bushes covered in flowers.

I agree with Ken--it looks like someone is messing with you. That does not look like Julia--even the bloom structure is off. I grow three Julias--two for 16 years and grafted, and a third Julia own root. None have ever shown this coloration, which, by the way, is lovely. Your rose just doesn't look like Julia. Diane

Help Me Find shows several examples of Julia Child getting a bit peachy and orangey. I would guess cooler weather as the casue more so than soil.

Above is one of my Julias in late Nov-arly Dec, during an unusually late fall. This is the darkest I've ever seen her, but she is more amber than apricot. Usually our first hard frost is in October, but Julia is always the last rose standing when it gets quite cold. Diane

My "winter Julia" is apricot colored, like Diane's. As it gets warmer, she turns yellow. So this rose is definitely capable of producing both yellow or apricot blooms.

Beautiful rose Diane...

i have definitely seen similar shape on some of the fresh opening buds, but the stems are not as dark as yours. the stems do tend to get darker as we appro cooler weather. will keep an eye to compare. my plant is still establishing and was a slow grower so far...previous three years the blooms were not nearly as big as now. this year it suddenly has gone on a visible growth spurt. i guess she was busy working on roots so far. one thing that has not changed is the tendency to bloom repeatedly from May until Frost. best of all, deer tend to leave her alone while they munch on my Mr. Lincoln whenever they get slightest chance.

i looked up over web and seems like mine is not an exception. Many photos look similar to what i am seeing in terms of color. just not quite sure what causing this. only time i see hint of yellow is when fallen petals are drying.

Julia or not i LOVE her :)

The foliage and form both look very similar to my Julia Child, so I think it’s still a possibility. You had also said that it previously had yellow blooms in its first year, so I would suppose at that time it looked very much like JC. I do agree to have JC be so solidly apricot is unusual perhaps when your weather changes you’ll start to see more yellow again.

@marascz9b, it does look a lot like the At Last rose. but doesnt explain why i had yellow blooms the first year.

and the fallen petals mysteriously turn yellow before wilting.

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14), so the chance of her being Julia is still a valid one.

She was a tiny 7” plant when i bought her 4 years ago and planted with the soil she was originally potted in. this is why I suspect the garden soil combined with the weather might have something to do with the color. Though i did not get a soil test done, my hydrangeas in the same bed are never blue without some aluminium sulphate help. so i guess the soil is leaning alkaline.

she is still quite young and the way blooms have changed compared to last summer, i think more transfomation is coming. may be this is teenage tantrum? I will keep you all posted on the color journey this season.
