We had frost for the last few days in May. The cucumbers and melon seedlings died. I started wave petunias from Burpee seeds and potted them in hanging baskets. However, the foliage is not what I expected. Compared to the wave petunias I bought from the nursery, the leaves are much larger and it is vine like. I threw out the seed pack but I was positive that they are waves. They are doing well though. The roses are leafed out but one bed needs weeding.

I watered everything well today as we have had little rain.

We wish we would get some rain!

I just got started...my wheelbarrow garden on Mother's Day and some tomatoes, peppers and cilantro basil and rosemary.

I have some back problems and asthma which has slowed me down.

Heh, send some of that rain my way please. It was a dry and mild winter, a dry and warm spring, and we sure could use some regular rainfall.

The indoor grow setup was taken down a week ago. The produce and flower annuals are all in the ground and almost all the seed set. Still got some greens and bean seed to go in this week. Garlic is doing well considering how dry it's been, but no scapes yet on the hardnecks. Now it's just keeping up on weeding and watering with those.

The perennial areas... oh boy. There's a lot of work to be done with cleaning some of them up and a couple need resetting.

My shasta daisies are getting ready to bloom out front. I'm so excited! This year I got some round wire plant holders to prop up my tall perennials. They grow up through them and then the wire can't be seen. Last year it would rain or be super windy and they would flop over. So far really like them. Since I planted a bunch of bulbs last Fall, all the foliage is dying now so I put several large pots in there with flowers that spill out over the sides of the pot to have something to replace the bulbs now that they're all died back. My idea was to start the flowers from seeds so it wouldn't be so expensive but I didn't do that. I started zinnias and no other flowers for some reason.

Wish I could send you all some rain. I'm glad for it sometimes, no watering needed but then you can't really get out there and work if you need to.

I like shasta daisies, they are so happy. I got bunches of them all over the place out in the wilder acres of the property that pop out at you this time of year. The daffodils that pop all over have all died back into the grasses by now, and in my gardens.

I tried to not get too crazy with the annuals this year with all the work I have to catch up on in the perennial beds. I didn't get anything done last year due to various illness and injury issues so got double the work this year to whip them back into shape. Hadn't thought about maybe putting some pots over spent bulb spots, that's an excellent idea. I have one particular bed that would work well with that as I get it cleared. That bed has lemon balm that has thrived all spring and it's time for it to get transplanted to a different spot that can use its invasive habit.

I would be happy to take some rain. We haven't had much at my house. I have 2 wells, one for the house and another one with undrinkable water for the garden, so I do water my garden plants. I worry about a well going dry and having to deal with it without my husband.

Where I live in west central Florida, we had less than 1/4" of rain in May. So horribly dry. For the first 5 months, we are down close to 3". The forecasters keep mentioning rain, but it just isn't happening!!!

Beesneeds, I got the idea from an older man who lived in the next little neighborhood over from mine. He had a round garden out front of his home with pots of flowers every year. Absolutely beautiful and not a lot of work. He has since passed away or moved away because the house sold and that little garden is a mess now.

It stopped raining for a short time and I got a bunch of stuff planted. I ran out of compost so will have to make another run tomorrow. Just have the side of the house to plant and one very shaded raised bed in the backyard to plant. I may just buy some hostas and put in there now that I know they're edible. My big oak tree shades it out too much now. Planted okra in it last year and they didn't do too well.

I've decided to try cucumbers this year. I haven't tried to plant them in years because they are the one thing that never seems to do good for me.

We did have a late for us frost this year, so this has been slowing things down. There are still a lot less insects than usual. Hardly even getting mosquito bites. Not really doing any vegetables this year. But raspberries and strawberries are ready. Blueberries are getting there. I think the peaches froze off for the most part. I do mostly plant flowers. About 3/4 through a 20 yard load of mulch. Not nearly enough. The view from my new bench seems to get more colorful every day.

No borders around them yet. One never knows if they might need expanding :)

The house we purchased had no landscaping. I purchased 5 Emerald green junipers, lost ALL 5. 4 aspen trees. A plum tree. A cherry tree. All died. They had a one year warranty. I returned them. I'm replacing them all. A few perennial flowers and trees did live. The growing season is really short here. It's rained for 3 days straight....stops for a few days, then picks up again. It got down to 38F last night. In a week the Iris will be blooming.

Iris, I have no border around my front flower garden either. Yours' looks a lot neater than mine. Someday I'll have a professional come in and do something with it.

Nicole, that would be so frustrating, having plants die like that. I did move one of my raspberry plants today, didn't seem to like the big "pot" it was in so now it's in a raised bed. Hopefully it will like it better. My other one is in a bourbon barrel and doing great.

Kath....I'm in good company. The guy behind me has a mansion, big lawn, big flower gardens...well spaced row of Summer Snow crabapple trees. He lost 5 out of 8! He's having them replaced professionally.....about a thousand dollars a tree! One aspen tree was $17.95......at my house. ♥

Nicole, wonder why? I can't imagine paying that much for a tree. The most was a little over $100 (memory not so good so?) and I had to cut it down when they built my porch on the back of the house. I was so excited when the stump started to sprout. It is now getting a little bushy and I plan to keep it cut into a small tree. It wasn't supposed to get over 5 foot tall but it was way over my roof on the old sunroom when it got cut down.

Kath....he's having them planted with a tree-spade. The root balls are 4'round! The nurseries are going nuts here. Long lines with 40 people ahead of you. I've spent a lot of time talking to people in line....shopping for plants is quite the new social event. ♥ I ran out of Fertilome root stimulator. I'll try to be there @ 8am when they open...almost no one there that early. lol

We're in a drought this early in the season. Next week it will be in the mid-'90s all week. We have tomato plants and zucchinis and they're growing. My son gave me a hanging tomato plant in a basket and I have gotten at least 20=25 cherry tomatoes off it.

103 here in Oregon today, and we had a dry winter. Send us some rain please!

My garden is doing good. I have lots of tomatoes and grapes already, and a few bell peppers. My roses look a little pathetic, but I will fix that. I have a mass of asiatic lilies in all different colors going mad. The only thing giving me attitude are the hardy hibiscus i ordered from jungs. I planted 7 of them. And so far only 4 have shown any signs of life. And they are not strong signs of life either. I am sitting on my couch,Leo and Otis snoring at my feet and I heard a heavy rain move in. Good. I won't have to stand out there with the hose at 5:30 am watering. I have to be really consistent with a lot of my plants. I have some of my tomatoes and peppers in pots, and in Alabama sometimes you have to water those things twice a day to keep them alive. I also have a yellow pear tomato that I plant in a burnt out stump next to my driveway every year and it always does great. It doesn't seem to want as much water as the others for some reason.

My large garden at work is driving me somewhat nuts. Its mainly roses, a few hibiscus and some lilies and glads. Its a raised brick bed and when it heats up outside, I have to water water water water. I am always grateful for a big rain storm,saves me from having to stand out there in the heat and humidity for a little bit. And the aphids have declared an all out war on me. They swarm 2 of my 18 roses I have out there. Always the same 2, my Tropicana and an unknown red one. I cannot get them under control. Grrrrrrr. Dont get me started on the Japanese beetles. Evil little things.......

Amylou, I'm so glad I don't have to deal with Japanese beetles here. I think I have too many birds for them to be a bother here. When I lived in the hills down south it was so much worse.

It will not stop raining so I can even mow the grass. I went out to feed the fish in waterlily tanks, water over my ankles, and found 2 turtles....red eared sliders....water turtles....not in the lily tanks....cruising around in the water surrounding the tanks. I had to go out of town Monday. I needed some horse feed, so bought some while I was gone. It hadn't rained for 2 days, so I drove into the barn to unload it. I should have driven the truck back out....but I was tired and I didn't. It poured down that night and rained all the next day. I don't even know if I can get the truck out if the barn now, without getting stuck. I can't imagine how much worse it could be if I didn't live on top of a hill and have very sandy soil.

It rained off and on yesterday, today it is pouring rain.

We have had such fluctuations in weather so far that it has been tough on a lot of my plants, especially some fruits - lost probably half of my blueberries in the last hard freeze, all but 2 peaches, most of the pears. One pear was hit with peach leaf curl early (and I didn't know they could get that), but I sprayed it and it seems to have recovered.

It stayed very chilly & rainy until mid May, then we had 10 or so very dry (low humidity) windy, and hot days, now we are back to unseasonably cool but not excessively rainy (yet). My sweet peppers are not happy but are hanging on, same for my potted citrus, however the arugula is thriving, the grapevine has several baby clusters, and, if I can keep the squirrels and birds at bay, I am looking at a bumper crop of tart cherries and plums. I don't grow a lot of vegetables since my full sun areas are limited away from the potted fruit trees, but I have butternut squash plants sprouted in the compost pile that I need to move to their full sun location on the next dry day - maybe tomorrow. These are seed from last year's crop - the best butternuts I have ever had, and lasted me all winter (still have 2 left to cook).

The roses are all spectacular this year, more blooms than I have ever had before. Even the bedraggled half dead potted ones, that I snagged at the grocery store for 25 cents/pot, recovered over the winter and are putting on a wonderful display.

Some of the flowers I planted are sprouting as are the okra. I can't wait for the okra to be ready to pick. Probably my favorite garden food.
