Can shower curtain tension rod be used on Swanstone shower walls?

Had tub/shower combination removed and step-in shower installed. Contractor was concerned that tension rod would harm walls and installed the rod on the tile above the shower walls. It's too high and difficult to find curtains long enough. Can I put the tension rod on the Swanstone or have decorative tile installed at the top of the shower and place the rod there on the tile?

Swanstone is described as hard and non-porous, so what, specifically, is your contractor concerned about?

Thank you for your quick response. The contractor mentioned that he was concerned that the constant pressure by the tension rod on the Swanstone would cause the two walls to crack.

I have a tension rod in my tile shower with both a decorative curtain and cloth liner on it and have had no problems with it coming down at all. I also have a tension rod in the guest fiberglass shower stall and have no problems when it's used. I don't think I've ever had one as long as would be required for a bathtub though, and wonder how well a longer length would hold the weight of a wider curtain and deal with potential sag in the middle that might drag it off the wall?

Hi, Pepperidge. Both are possibilities for sure. After all we're just holding up a pipe, and in our rather old-fashioned layouts the pipes will be over doorways and hidden behind solid walls. I am wondering about rust and would prefer to buy something made for showers. I just like curtains better than glass doors for us, so our master bath shower will have a cloth curtain framing its doorway and the plastic curtain inside. The other bath is a powder room with a shower for the occasional guest hidden behind a wood door, so in this case a curtain is just a way of making it work. Does anyone have one of those pivoting flange units sold on curved rods?

Hi Lisa, I saw a very cool idea in a magazine recently (wish I could remember which one!). The homeowners had installed some kind of a flat bar on the ceiling which the shower curtain was attached into via clips or something that ran inside the center groove of this flat bar. (A bit similar to the grooves in ceilings that they have for privacy curtains in dr.'s offices and hospital settings). Of course this is very high, so the homeowner had purchased two shower curtains that coordinated and simply stitched a header (or you could do a footer depending on preference) of the other color. This header was a good 12" deep, and the result was really beautiful. And all I could think of was what a smooth operation it would be! Of course I have no idea where you would get such a thing, but maybe someone else does... Lynn

I went to Lowes today and actually found 2 options. A nice satin nickel finish one for 24.99 and one that was more chrome colored with plastic brackets for 12.99. I liked the nickel one but the brackets seemed to be a bit large and I was concerned that my children wouldn't be able to close the shower curtain all the way to the wall - increasing the liklihood of a flood with each shower. So I ended up with the cheaper one. Not the best quality, but hopefully it will last long enough for me to find some things to sell on ebay so I can afford the one on Homeclick :-).

Oh boy!! I am going to have that rod put right down on those Swanstone walls asap. So glad for your info. Thanks so much! What a help you were. I am 100% wheelchair dependent and really was fretting about how to remedy this. A couple of years ago when I had the bathroom rehab done, I had frameless shower doors installed. Was ok for a while because I could get into the shower without transferring....just holding onto shower bars and such. My condition progressed until I could only access shower by transferring from wheelchair and the sliding glass doors did not give me enough room to safely transfer in and out, so I had doors taken out and went to the shower curtains. Works much better!

Tension rods do not exert anywhere enough pressure to cause cracking. All the ones I am familiar with have a rubberized surface on each end which would cushion the minimal pressure from the rod.
