Irises New Jersey Gardening Bulbs

Best Indoor Irises?

I have gotten into gardening very recently. All of my plants are indoors as I feel nervous around bees.

(I am aware of the whole 'you don't bother them, they don't bother you' rule, but I am scared that I will accidentally provoke them by accidentally making a sudden movement while gardening, or going too close. I do not want them to die since they usually die upon stinging.)

I have been considering getting iris bulbs to plant indoors- however I don't know what kind of irises would be a good choice. I've heard that smaller varieties tend to fare better indoors. Is this true? And what would be a good choice for a beginner to grow?

As a plant that grows easily outdoors anywhere in the US, iris will make very poor houseplants. Indoor conditions do not come close to replicating what they need in terms of sunlight, natural seasonal temperature swings and humidity. And the same can be said for virtually any outdoor plant you try to bring in and grow indoors. It will never be a long term situation for them.

Ohhh, that makes sense- I'll keep that in mind going forward when selecting plants. That also explains why my sunflower plant died very quickly. Thank you so much, this is very helpful!

Our Garden Club just last week visited an iris grower. He had fields of iris. One of the main questions was when to move iris, and how often to clean them up He said that the best time to clean and move iris, is six weeks after they finish blooming. He also said that all the dead or parts should be removed and just put back the new roots. He had a beautiful selection of iris and has been doing this for years. It was an interesting meeting. He invited all of us back if we wanted to buy iris in six weeks as he will have them for sale. Hope this helps.

Time for a reblooming iris report. In zone 6b Maryland CLARENCE died of rot. My fault. I planted him too deep in unamended clay soil. Note to newbies. When "they" say to plant these things near the soil surface what they mean is at the surface with the white part at the bottom of the stems showing. Live and learn. IMMORTALITY had a profuse autumn bloom. Nice clean white color, pretty flower and wonderful sweet fragrance. If you want a white iris then this is the one to get. Neither JENNIFER REBECCA or PINK ATTRACTION have ever rebloomed. It really doesn't matter with Jennifer Rebecca because she is so beautiful that I'm going to continue to grow her no matter what. GORGEOUS flower! Not true pink but more like a purply-pink. POWERFUL fragrance. Large buxom bloom, strong stem/stalk, and pretty foliage. A keeper. Pink Attraction gets pulled out. The color is more coral beige than pink and looks like dead flesh. Yuck! Next spring I'd like to try: Clarence, Beverly Sills, Earl of Essex, Harvest of Memories, Late Lilac, and Sugar Blues. What is best way to label irises?

Laetitia, The smaller the marker is the less likely it is to get away. All I have on my markers is a reference number. When I set out a new group of iris the numbers are in sequence so if one or more get lost or pulled up by animals it is very easy to figure out what the missing number or numbers are. I have had several that were pulled up by what I believe were deer. I have mine stuck deeply in the ground and they have to leave teeth markers on the marker to pull them out. The only draw back to this method is that I need to bring my reference book with me to ID iris if I don't remember what they are. I do this often anyway because I have a page for each iris to keep notes. Since I have only been at this 3 years and only have about 250 different iris I know what most of them are. Lee Mincy

You might be able to grow some of the very early spring iris like I reticulata or I danfordiae. You’d need to look into the technique of forcing bulbs. It isn't just a matter of planting them in ordinary indoor conditions.

Essentially, your gardening life will be really restricted if you won’t go outside. I think that you need to work on the bee thing because it’s going to really affect your ability to enjoy your new interest. I’m assuming you go outdoors sometimes? Gardening isn’t going to provoke bees any more than simply walking through a park. In many decades of gardening and plant watching I’ve never been stung by a bee.
