Golden, thanks for posting this warning! Diffenbacia (dumb cane), philodendron are a couple of common house plants that are toxic. Pencil cactus, & so many more! I love my 2 different species of elephant ears, but they are way down back where the grandkids are never unsupervised. Same with my houseplants, I have some toxic ones, and just try to make sure the kids are never unattended around them. And I try to keep them where they're not easily attainable by them. Anyhow ... I always wear gloves when gardening. Always! (for 30+ years now) And I've never gotten poison oak or ivy rashes or anything like that. Good fitting leather gloves are best. They last for years, and are like a true second skin. Worth the investment. They have kept my hands from getting cut or injured outside so many times. Be safe and don't be eating or handling any plants that you're not sure about, and watch the kids & pets! Take precautions by using clothing and gloves when handling. Watch out rubbing your eyes, etc after handing them too. Always wash up really good after playing in the dirt! Now as for bugs flying into your mouth outside ... yep stuff like that can happen! I've got a friend who had a bug fly into his ear when we were sitting around a swimming pool outside one night ... it's funny to think of him stomping the floor board in the car everytime the bug would move in his ear when we were on the way to the hospital LOL! but I'm sure he didn't think it was funny at all! So I have an idea. Big Lots carries outdoor containers/pots that have no drainage holes. That always bugged me... until today! I'm wondering if they would be perfect? From what I am reading, colocasia like it very wet - in fact you can submerge them in pots in water/pond. I would like to stick these in the ground, but I do not want to deal with runners and an invasive plant. I think I am going to pick up a couple of those very cheap pots at Big Lots and sink those in the ground with my new bulbs. Help me - is there anything bad about this idea? Carol

I'd like to know also. I have them all over my yard, growing up the oak trees. I looked at the pictures of an Arrowhead Vine and Syngonium podophyllum; don't think that is it. What I have grows from a rather thick vine (after a few months of growth) and "sticks" to the bark of the tree as it runs up and over the branches. The leaves are more elongated and larger than a philodendren. Pictures to follow, as soon as I get over this flu which has knocked me out this past weekend.

I don't think they like water if it's cold for long periods. Doesn't happen in Zone 9. Don't know what the zone is for the original poster here. I agree they tolerate sun better than the traditional elephant ears but given the 100 plus degree weather we've had here in Houston, I think some protection might be in order. Again it depends on the climate of the original poster whether they should plant these in full sun.
