So. Are you bruising or swelling? Every time I hear of a self diagnosed sprain I'm taken back to the summer my sister took her daughter rafting when she was there for a visit. Her sprain that their guide gave first aid to was a fracture - that wasn't seen or xrayed for about 4 days.

Hopefully yours is just a sprain. But elevate, please, don't wash more clothes that need to be taken in and out ;0)

Don't these stupid accidents just piss you off? I sprained mine a few years ago getting up from a folding chair. I'm sure you will be fine wrapped. I didn't even do that and I was. But I've been doing the sideways walk many times a day down my stairs from my three-week-old leg laceration. Poop is right...lol

Morz, I didn't even think of a fracture. Yikes. But I can move my ankle in a circle, etc, so I'm assuming it's sprained. Yeah....self-diagnosing.

If it continues to be painful, you might need to get it x-rayed in case of a fracture. While visiting Vancouver a few years ago, I slipped on some ice and twisted my foot. It was painful and swollen so I wore a tensor bandage. When we got home, I went to a hospital to get it checked out and found out I had a fractured ankle. I wore a cast for several weeks.

If it swells or continues to hurt and/or you can't bear weight, get it checked out please. Hope it is better soon. I'm sure you made the dog happy by petting it.

Yeah, I fell in a hole and broke my ankle...looked like a bad sprain though but I had it x-rayed and there it was. Did the same thing 10 years later to my other ankle, only that time I knew I broke it.

It's a long drive, but I can make myself available for ice packs and massage!

One time I fell off the mat at front door, so like an inch. Worst sprain , I literally saw stars. Another time I fractured my ankle and that hurt less than the sprain. Sorry it happened to you! Don’t forget to RICE. Rest, ice, compress, elevate. Feel better.

Either way keep that ankle up when possible. I have had friends in their 30s who had heart attacks about a week later when the bruises were starting to break up. Less worry if there is no bruising but it should make it feel a little better.

I went right to the gym when I sprained mine getting out of a chair at pot luck supper. I know it wasn't broken but I should have stayed off it more since it was swollen a little and every once in a while I still feel a tinge. Be smarter than me and stay off of it for a while.

I am so sorry for what you are going through. I am a frequent ankle turner and no matter how careful you are, it just happens.

I keep an elastic ankle compression sleeve handy, as well as a set of crutches and a cane.

I'm really sorry you hurt your ankle. It's no fun.

What I. thought was a sprain turned out to be two broken bones in my foot. Found out after I had been walking on it (well limping on it) for about 10 days!

So sorry. My ankles are weak from sprains as well. Good that you started icing and resting it right away.

I would have it check. I also wound up with a small fracture also a torn tendon. You never really know until you see a doctor.

Reading all these posts make me realize how fortunate I am. In February, I had company for a week. Despite me asking her not to bring her dogs, she brought them anyway. They dug a couple of holes right in the pathway between the barn and the pasture. I admit, I should have filled them in right away, but I was busy taking care of Jody, and after he passed, totally unmotivated to do much of anything. But the one thing I always have to do is take care of my animals.

I feed the horses twice a day. Mariah eats in a stall. I open the gate and she goes to the barn and gets in her stall, but I have to lead her back to the pasture when she is finished.

It has rained for a month, and the grass is so tall, I forgot about the holes the dogs had dug, and leading Mariah, I tripped and fell in one of the holes. Since I fell right in front of her, I am lucky she didn't step on me. Also I didn't hurt myself. I was a little sore the next day, but not too bad. I would have been in bad shape if I had broken my ankle. No one to help me. I don't know what I would have done. I know what I did do though, immediately. I got a shovel and filled in the hole. I was mad, and I said a whole lot worse than "poop". I know she is going to want to come back again. She can leave the dogs home, and she can stay there with them.

No, Marilyn. What your friend should have done is filled in the holes her dogs had dug immediately, not you.

Exactly. People can be so frustrating and inconsiderate.

Marilyn, I'd be livid!! You can do without 'company' like that! I'd be glad to see her go, and not want to see her darken my doorstep for quite awhile.

Many years ago I crashed my bike and injured my foot while on a bike camping trip down the CA coast. It didn't hurt too badly at first, but I made the mistake of taking my shoe off to look at it when we stopped for lunch. It immediately puffed up and really hurt after that. LOTS of bruising.

We stopped at an urgent care where they took an x-ray; the MD there said no break, just severe soft tissue injury and keep it wrapped - which I did. Kept riding for a couple of days - it only really hurt when I put my foot down for a stop - probably because of the stiff cycling shoes, but then it really hurt and kept getting worse. So, when we reached LA we rode over to the train station and I took the train back to San Diego. Went in to see an orthopedist and yes, it was fractured.

That is when I learned that a lot of bruising is a strong indication that there is a fracture.

One of the things that is not understood is that unless there is displacement of bone fractures will not show up on x-rays until the broken area starts healing. The healing depends on each person but it will take several days to show up if it is a separation of bone.

And one of the things that happens is variation in the skill of the person reading the x-ray. With my broken finger, the resident looked at the x-ray and said no break...the radiologist looked at it and said there is a break.

Friend's daughter was in an accident and went to the ER and doc said her neck wasn't broken even though she asked him what that dark line was on the x-ray. Went to another doc and sure enough, her neck was broken!

A friend and I were set to go yesterday for x-rays, but it felt so much better when I got up in the morning. I could put pretty much my full weight on it. I walked around, both using my walking pole and without.

So I told her we'd leave it. My toes and top of my foot were swollen so I removed the elastic sleeve type bandage and put a tensor bandage on it.

Yesterday late afternoon it was definitely sore again, but I had taken the garbage and recycling to the curb and climbed up and down the stairs a few times.

Anytime I want to go, she's definitely willing to take me. I feel that if it was cracked I wouldn't be able to put any weight on it. I still elevate it often.
