deck stain? low voc questions
Comments (13)Tibbrix, I guess you haven't seen these new low voc 'stains'. You are correct that stain doesn't peel, but these new stains are more like a paint, as they're acrylic with very little real oil in the formulation, apparently. Much of the criticism which I have uncovered complains about the peeling of these stains. We had just removed our old cedar decrepit deck - the carpenter bees were having a field day with it. We did some research and found that carpenter bees like PT less than cedar (we hope that's true). So the PT is not a beautiful wood like cedar and we'd like a little deeper color - hence the semi-transparent search. Even the sealer type stuff which is now low VOC is having the same issue with durability. Alas....is there no decent solution to my problem? ;-)...See MoreRed Oak or White Oak? Stain color??
Comments (14)Like jfcwood states - the FINAL colour is the true test as to whether the experiment "worked". The other problem contractors have would be the use of oil based or oil modified finishes. It is impossible to get a white floor when the top coats turn ORANGE! I once had a "professional" (15 years in the refinishing business) tell me he worked with "water based" finishes all the time. He then named every SINGLE oil based product on his shelf. It turns out he thought that anything that was liquid - like water - was water based. He couldn't name a water based finish if it jumped up and slapped him with a lawsuit! The "old guard" are having a hard time adjusting to the "new" thinking. The Low VOC stuff, the 'non ambering' stuff, the low-odour products are relatively new (to North America...they are de rigueur in Europe) and are different to use. They require training. Training is no big deal in Europe. You have to do it to keep your license. North America is still the wild-wild west. If you have a sanding machine, you can call yourself a floor refinisher (sad...but true). Add that to the fact that red oak is cheaper than white oak and the trend is white flooring, you get a powerful mixture of fashion together with lack of knowledge and a healthy dose of "cheaper is better". A whole bunch of hearts have and will continue to be broken - on both sides of the professional-client fence. My advice: If you want the look of European Oak, then you should start with European Oak. If you are lucky enough to like the reddish tones of Red Oak, then go ahead and work with Red Oak; count your blessings and the money left in your bank account....See MoreLow VOC water-based poly: Vermont Natural Coatings? Comments (23)Polyurethane is not water proof. It is water resistant but not water proof. It will slow down the transition of water from the surface into the wood but it won't stop it completely. My guess is the edges that allowed a snick more water to reach the wood have had a snick more finish taken off. That's about as exciting as it gets. The drop in the gloss level is not something I would worry about. You sanded a finished surface. In other words you scuffed it up so much that you reduced the gloss level. Have you removed all the finish? No. Have you reduced the gloss level? Yes of course you did. That's what sanding does. Again, the issue with adhesion is going to be an on-going situation. Regardless of gloss loss or not. You can test treat a plank or two and leave them alone for 2 weeks (allow full cure) and then try the scratch test. I would leave them alone. Install the floor and use it until it becomes so bad that a full sand/refinish is needed. The only way to ensure good adhesion is to do a full sand/refinish. Until you get to that point, you could be setting yourself up for failure....See MoreRed Oak Floor Stain: Go Lighter! {Classic Gray & Special Walnut blend}
Comments (27)@Amy Molina thank you for advising. your color really is beautiful!!! i just selected last monday chestnut/classic. it did not appear to have any of that red orange showing through - just a nice neutral brown color. in my opinion, it is like a special walnut but greatly improved. special walnut was a yuck! color on my floor showing orange and the grains too bold. classic gray is the ticket to modernize a color if looking for a brown. its just finding the right brown that is tricky. now i am just hoping i selected a dark enough brown - yoir looks great! they come and do ours tomorrow in the official color....See MoreJackie
