My little homemade seed starter
Comments (38)I do have lights but no aquarium or heat mats, ingenious idea. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to harden the plants off starting them like that. I start most of mine outside when the last frost is over except set a lot out in February when I read the winter sowing technique. Unless you are growing very large, deep-rooted plants, I don't see why you can't cut the tube in half other than your aquarium light might not be adjustable. Plus if you are planting in the tube, you have to dig a pretty deep hole. I do use my bulb planter for some that end up in plastic cups. I explained how I start most of my seeds on the lavender thread. I had figured most of it out before I found the winter sowing forum, but have learned a lot from that, too. I've been reluctant to only put 2 seeds in a slot, some are so tiny you can't and the failures take up a lot of room. I do prick some out and put them in 6 packs, but that is only for plants I want to control the spacing. With your tubes, you can do that....See MoreHomemade Hoop House Shade Cover Question
Comments (1)Are you planning to remove the poly in summer? That would be my plan, just shade cloth in summer. Poly plus shade cloth in winter. The most durable and best for the money shade cloth is woven black polypropylene. I use 30% but also have a very good evaporative cooling system which is a lot more effective cooling in the desert than anything else. You might want 40-50% shade cloth. Mine has lasted 10-40 years of part time use....See MoreHomemade garden 'tonic' success stories?
Comments (75)I buy a product called Sea-90 which is harvested ocean salt. A lab found it contains 92 minerals, trace elements and organic compounds plus more than 50,000 organic substances in the just the right proportions. Crop production benefits from enhanced micro flora populations include: Enhanced nutrient uptake Significantly improved flavor Greater production and yields Reduced days to harvest Reduced transplant shock Reduced drought stress Reduced heat stress I add it to the soil and also use it as a spray for leaves. Aphids hate it and it will cure many diseases as well. I swear this i something you'll want to know about. There's years of research behind it. Read amazing and detailed info on the sea-90 website. [seaagri.com] Not an ad. I don't benefit from this, I just think our soil needs the minerals....See MoreMy homemade cloning machine
Comments (57)Ahh to the gentleman in Binghamton, there's a hydroponics store in Vestal on called Planted Earth In fact I think it's on Vestal Rd, They'll have everything you're looking for. The EZ Clone people have a product called REZ-CLEAR that they recommend for extending the life of the solution and keeping if free of algae and contaminants. I've just started usin it so no comments. I am trying to clone blueberries on a large scale. Unlike the posters here I did everything the formal (and expensive) way. So far.....not good. Tons of correspondence with manufacturers of clone machines and additives and they seemed to know alot less than me with their expertise being in the cannibis. I've asked one question of The Hormex people, the ez clone folks, Turbo Klone, Turbo King, Dip & Grow etc: Why are you recommending a solution PH of 6.0 for a plant that grows best in the field with a PH of 4.5-4.8. Their response? Try 5.5 And there it sits. Dip & Glo (the only knowledgeable person I've engaged with) does not recommend his solution in the tank. As a matter of fact, it breaks down in ten hours anyway. IBA is indeed insoluable, but NAA is not. Dip & Glo combines both in a liquid form as does Hormex in their Liquid concentrate. Hormex, however, recommends their liquid concentrate in the cloning solution. And I am currently using that at the recommended dosage (not on the label) of one tsp per five gals. along with silica and the CLEAR-REZ. While D n Grow recommends a 1 to 5 second dip with the cuttings that's for dirt (or dry medias) and rendered ineffective when washed off in a cloning machine. On this round of cuttings I tried to establish control groups and dipped the cuttings in the D&G for extended periods of time - up to 1/2 hr. - before they went into the machine. In another machine that is doing nothing but keeping the cuttings barely alive, I pulled out several rows of cuttings and immersed them in the dip and grow for over an hour. The theory (completely unproven) .....coating will wash off, the plant has to absorb the liquid to have any chance to be effectve. ONe note: The humidity dome is considered largely ineffective. it's been proven that the stems can absorb enough liquid from the bombardment they're receiving and I'd bet the dome is contributing to the rot. Conclusion: There are too many variables for me to ever be able to figure this out. At this point I am absolutely nowhere without a single success - though who knows, this current batch may actually root. Any solid advise about The blueberry and a cloning machine would be appreciated. SteveAJL at the American on Line Place...See Morebeesneeds
