Should I get semi-gloss finish for hardwood floors?
Comments (38)We got a kick out of Tim's post (above). Call me immature --- I'm the daughter and sister of interior designers/textile weavers and they are knocked out by my glossy floors. I initially had some doubts but now I'm so glad we went with the high gloss. The light in the room is amazing with the glossy reflection of the honey oak floors. We have gotten no less than 3 requests for the name of our floor contractor because they look so gorgeous. Most people don't know why they look different --- it's because high gloss is not trendy and hasn't been for some time. Most people go with the matte or satin finish. I had concerns about the glossy floors showing dirt but it's the opposite. My floors were less glossy before we had them refinished and there really is no difference. We are still in the middle of our remodel and have had workers coming and going --- the floors are frankly filthy but you wouldn't know it until you drag a wet rag across the floor. This might be a problem with darker floors but not with the oak. I also think the high gloss has an elegant, more formal look while the matte finish is more casual/earthy. Comments (1)I grew up in a house with chestnut woodwork....and I believe that's what you have. Mineral spirits and paint thinner are the same thing....neither will remove varnish, paint nor shellac....just wax and grease. it won't even remove a drop of milk or any sugar-ey dirt. I bel;ieve that historically, shellac was what was used in that period....if you don't want shine....hit it with 10 ought steel wool....or 6 ought... Don't wax it....with an open grain like chestnut it will build up in the grain and be awful! I would use a wiping stain.....and mix and test and mix and test.....and when you get it right remember what you did! It can be done! I have done it. Good luck! Comments (20)I do this for a living in an area with very finicky clients, so my standards may be a little different than some. I'm pragmatic but do recognize that appearance and feel of a floor is important. I don't think the sealer and stain will cause a problem, but personally, I would not like it. My White Oak master bedroom floor was finished about 15 years ago with BonaSeal and maybe Pacific Strong Silkmat, which is inferior to Traffic. It's held up well but does have some scuffs and dings where some a/c ducting was dropped from the ceiling. It would not have benefitted from an extra coat of finish. Had it been finished with a stain and four coats, I think the dings and scuffs, and scratches from our dog, would be more apparent. If I was to move the furniture and recoat the floor, it would look quite good, except for the dings. What kind of wood is your floor?...See Morereusing wood from kitchen floor & looking at backsplash
Comments (2)Or are you asking about the wood? The wood gets a resounding YES there are things to do with it. Like letting me pick it up for my own rebuild. I'm a good cause. LOL! What were you thinking of? You didn't tell us what KIND of wood it is? Flooring? Structural lumber? Newer ship lap (quite the fad, thank you JG) or paneling....See MoreOlychick
