In the slam(mer)

Just who coined this expression is, as is the case with most prison slang, impossible to determine. The reference is to the great slam when the doors on jail cells are closed. In most large modern jails all the doors in the cell block can be opened or closed at one time. As a result the slamming noise of all those metal doors hitting metal door frames at one time is truly horrendous.
