Living room set up help!

I would love any ideas or suggestions on the best way to set up this living room with a TV. We do have plans to paint this a brighter neutral (off-white or gray) color to bring more light into this room.

I love the idea of a nice lounging sectional in the space as we love hosting family over for movie and game nights.

I’m not a huge fan of asymmetry so not sure placing the TV on either side of the fireplace works. While I don’t prefer above fireplace mounting, I’m leaning towards it to maximize the space in the area.

I was thinking shelving / narrow console or something on either side of the fireplace could be nice, but it’s already a fairly small space so don’t want it to feel cluttered.

Would love any suggestions!

If you go with the tv over the fireplace, add sectional (no chaise) and chair in the corner, keep the right side of the fireplace free of furniture. Add a large piece of art in that area. Add round coffee table. Small end table to left of sectional. Overhead lighting instead of table lamps would be best in this room.

Use painters tape to plan out your room. Pick a sectional that is not bulky. Slim lines, won't give it a heavy weight in the room.

Less is more in this room.

There's too much visual weight in the fireplace end of the room. Even the massive sectional can't compensate due to its light color. Is there equal wall space either side of the wide door into the room? What do you use the armoire for? How many people, maximum, sit on the sectional for game night? Do they enjoy being rowed up like they're on bleachers at a sporting event? Is that the best way for them to enjoy playing games (I assume video games, not table games;) that will make a difference?

Thanks for the response! I’ve added a few additional pictures. To be clear, this is not my current set up, rather how the current homeowners have it! I’m trying to go ahead and prepare ahead of time so I can buy pieces accordingly. :)

Trying to get seating for at least 6. So I thought the sectional would be nice and maybe putting a small chair in the corner where the TV is currently for another seat.

I think it’s the same width on either side of the doorway. The current “back” of the sectional flows into the kitchen so I figure some people may be able to stay at the kitchen table to still see the screen when we watch sports.

We think you are on the right track, your design just needs some tweaking. Here are a few ways in which you can get the look you want. Get rid of the big chair by the window in exchange for something smaller, and put it next to the chair on the left. Change out the TV console for something longer and thinner. Then add some great artwork over the fireplace. Next add thicker window treatments to the windows, and get a longer coffee table. Perhaps when you get a coffee table and the TV console look for something in wood instead of black. Also we recommend taking down the four pictures above the TV. Instead you can hang two vertically on each side of the TV if you want to keep them. Note the set up below? We think this arrangement would work, except flip the chairs to the other side. From 108 - 120" is the minimum space it will take. Use painter's tape to tape off the traffic path through the room and you'll have a better idea of what can be done. Take a bed sheet and "fold/tape" it to replicate the amount of floor space the table and chairs require. You can move it to all three positions once the traffic path is defined. That should help you find the best spot for the table and chairs. Once that is determined, we can add other furnishings to the alternative locations.

Hello Shelby, Here are some pictures/ideas/suggestions for your consideration. Picture #1 is of the living room using what you have and adding some décor. #2 is if you could switch rooms the dinning room for the living room. It would be much better to be able to walk into a living room instead of a dinning room. I understand that it would mean pulling the wires for the TV into the other room but I hope that an electrician could do that easily for you. Just a thought. Clarification questions: You are keeping the 3 seater and love seat leather couches? Getting rid of the recliner and the other love seat next to the recliner? Are you open/able to switch rooms? How do you feel about getting a 2 seater/love seat recliner that would match the size of the love seat you already have? If you are letting go of the two couches; what about a sectional? The corner that shares a wall with the kitchen could be a good place for TV. Then scale pieces properly to have a smaller arrangement similar to this with two chairs flanking the fireplace and two swivel chairs floating with their backs to the kitchen. Put a small sofa under the window. You should easily seat six, and if the coffee table is a bench or hassock it will be extra seating. It could also be a table with pull out stools underneath.

@decoenthusiaste I like the seating idea! The struggle I have now is our smallest TV is 70 inches (~63 inches wide) that I think will take up a ton of real estate when placed at the corner you're mentioning. The TV currently pictured is about a 50-55 inch (~48 inches wide).

Cut out a cardboard "TV" in the size of yours and try it out to see where it fits best for you. I think it will be much too wide for most of your walls and for above the FP. Perhaps the door could be narrowed to a more standard size on the right (away from electrical switches) and give you more wall space for TV to the right of the door. If you can wall mount or stand it on a swivel base you can make adjustments for viewing. What would you put in the corner by the kitchen if not the TV?

@decoenthusiaste That's a great idea to do a cutout. I'll definitely do that to play around with placement. The mantle is 76 inches wide so it looks like it'll fit but will double-check with the cutout method!

As far as that corner goes, it's currently part of the "walkway" that's most efficient to get to the main level powder room, which is located directly behind the right wall (behind the current TV set up) from the kitchen. So thought to keep it super simple and clean with maybe wall or corner shelving or just putting a ladder for throws, but DEFINITELY open to any suggestions at this point.

For best balance is it better to keep items hung above the mantel no wider than the firebox &/or its surround below the mantel.

I would move the tall cabinet on one of the walls left of the fireplace Maybe the TV The right of the fireplace or be straight on the left of the fireplace wall but that big cabinet would have to go over than where the wall on the other side of that open doorway left of that

Since you like symmetry, get two console tables with storage to place on both sides of the fireplace. Mount the TV above the console on the left side and a large mirror on the right side near the window. Then put artwork above the fireplace. That leaves your fireplace as the focal point in the room, and keeps the TV at better viewing height.

Below are just a few ideas that might just help you out of this dilemma. We might suggest trying the TV over the fireplace if that is what would work best for you. However you might want to measure over the fireplace to make sure the TV will fit.
