Help setting up Living Room (more multi-purpose)
We have a formal living room which we never use (it's 13.5x18 feet). We already have a dining room in case anyone thinks to suggest that. I like to play card games/do puzzles so was thinking of making this room more multi-purpose. I could put a couple of accent chairs (with small table between) in front of the windows. I was thinking of putting a 48" table (not card table - just a nice table preferably with glass top to eliminate scratching) in the center of the room with 4 chairs. We could also use it for extra seating when having larger gatherings/dinners. And then maybe a table (console, sideboard, etc?) on the small wall by the staircase. The area is also a walk way from the front door to the back of the house (kitchen/dining/den). Our style is contemporary/transitional. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions please! (Sorry the picture is flipped to show our actual layout so the words are backwards)

4 years agoI would make this into a relaxed foyer/family game room. In order not to block the traffic path from the entry through to the stairs, I would put your table by the stairwell and a pair of upholstered chairs and game table by the windows.

4 years agoThanks decoenthusiaste ! Let me provide a couple of real pictures. The two chairs I meant to have a little accent table (not game table). I want to add a 48" round or square table to hold 4 chairs in the room (cards, mahjong, puzzles, bridge, etc). How would you furnish/decorate it given that info? The furniture in the pic does not need to stay - the area by the stairs is too small to put a 48" table. The back long wall is 18' and you can see the front door in the picture. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Comments (3)Some thoughts-- Could you hang a small cabinet or place shelves above the toilet for storage? It looks like you are storing paper towels and toilet paper under the countertop. Perhaps the recycling could be moved to the garage. How about a curtain hung in front of the toilet? If you have children, they probably won't pull it closed, but they are also unlikely to close a door. My washer and dryer are front loaders under a countertop which can be used for folding. Some people seem to love that, others not. Just a thought. . . I would then extend the countertop for folding to include the sink so that you have one long surface. Since you moved the storage, laundry baskets could be stored under the countertop. By putting a shelf the depth of the countertop under the countertop halfway up from the floor, you will have room for more laundry baskets. A rod could extend from the side of the cabinets (or shelving unit, see below) above the countertop to the back wall, depending on how long the pants and skirts you would like to hang are. Mine fit above my countertop, but I'm not very tall, either. If you are tall, maybe you could hang the rod higher. New door? A pocket door. A step ladder could then be hung on the wall where the door currently swings. In fact, that would open the entire wall up for whatever you would like. The space is fairly narrow with the washer and dryer on the opposite wall, but the wall could be used to hang things. For a landing pad, you could use part of the countertop or mount hooks for keys, purse, etc. on the wall. It just depends on what you would like to use the landing pad for. OR, you don't say what you use the cabinets over the washer and dryer for. I'm guessing laundry detergent, etc., but there is quite a lot of storage space there. Raise the upper cabinet to the ceiling and you will have room for a shelf underneath which could suffice for a landing pad. Depending on what you are storing, replace the cabinet with shelving. I don't really see an option for a drying rack on the floor. I hang just about everything that doesn't need to dry flat. If it does need to dry flat, I use the countertop. By using skirt hangers with clips as well as regular plastic hangers, I can hang just about anything other than sweaters which must dry flat to avoid stretching. Comments (13)We think you are on the right track, your design just needs some tweaking. Here are a few ways in which you can get the look you want. Get rid of the big chair by the window in exchange for something smaller, and put it next to the chair on the left. Change out the TV console for something longer and thinner. Then add some great artwork over the fireplace. Next add thicker window treatments to the windows, and get a longer coffee table. Perhaps when you get a coffee table and the TV console look for something in wood instead of black. Also we recommend taking down the four pictures above the TV. Comments (18)Maybe first decide on how much and how deep the storage has to be. Are you planning to build it in or freestanding? Then the soft furniture. I'd likely end up with a short (< 78") and deepish low sofa (besides the usual suspects check out Interior Define or Article) with a bench seat and two comfy chairs with arms. No one really wants to perch on a seat like the chairs used in the first pic above. Lastly,the small tables etc. Your small (by modern US standards) room could really be a great introduction to your home and your style. Comments (10)Beautiful home and great seating classic modern seating pieces, which gives you a good start! Below is a plan which might work for you, as CDR Design above has indicated. All of the dimensions are approximate. If you would like to add dimensions and send back, I would be happy to revise the plan. This layout will give you a better flow and tighten up the zones. By relocating the tv and anchoring the main seating area with the new rug, it will delineate the function as lounging and tv watching. When you had the tv on the stair wall, the elevation of that wall is confusing and distracting with the entrance, stair, tv, hall to powder room. There was no place for your eyes to rest. You want your home to be inviting and relaxing. To add much needed front entrance storage, Ikea has simple tall storage cabinets. See link below. It can stay at the front door where you originally had your stand, but will be a closed cabinet. Relocate your wedding pic to the stair wall and put a narrow bench below. A beautiful bright color or print fabric would look key. The back area is the perfect place for a kid zone and the large lounge chair. Place a window seat under the window that will accommodate a toy chest under the seat and lots of pillows. Add bookcases on either side of the lounge chair, a small table with kids chairs for games, That little corner on the left is perfect for a kids tent. All the window treatments should be simple solid color (I like white or cream) curtain panels ceiling to floor, and full: at least 2x the width of the window and gathered tightly. 4 years agoA typical card table is 34 x 34, so maybe you could go smaller and fit a table by the stairs, if it is big enough for the kind of puzzles you do. A 48" table will require an additional 36-42" of space around it for chairs to be pulled out and sat in. Putting that in the center of the room will likely be a lock to traffic and will feel awkward if not centered with the fireplace. Another option, to clear the traffic path but have a larger table, is to get a drop leaf one that can be expanded when needed. Pr. uou could use a tall piece of casegoods to store the games and house books opposite the fireplace to counter balance it, and put your game table out in front of the windows. A table, lamp and small reading chair might still fit by the stairs. How often do you think you will actually use the room?
Here are a couple of drop leaf ones that could work like that. Do you have room for a window seat?

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoA 48" table and chairs will need a 120" x 120" space just to fit. That's allowing 36" all around for the chairs to pull in/out and be sat in. It might be even larger if you're using upholstered chairs with it. Have you shopped for the table and chairs yet? Have you seen the style you want? Here's a glass topped table and one with a design element. How far from the FP to the opposite wall?

4 years agoSince the fireplace is not centered in the room, placing it by the stairs works better and gives you enough of a traffic lane from the front door through the room. It doesn't have to be crammed in the corner but can float out a bit if needed. The corner one below is too tight and must be moved out to play. I also wouldn't put any of the chairs in the corner, but leave that open so it is easier to get into the chairs. It is all a matter of measuring.

3 years agoSo this is how we have the living room set up now and I'm actually using it! But I'm still stuck on the layout (and I'm not in love with the two striped chairs). The game table is 42" round and I'm temporarily using two chairs from the dining room table. Any ideas? Rug placement? Current layout ideas? I'd like some sort of wall table (accent/sideboard?). Ignore the picture leaning against the wall please!
