It could be a foursquare style that was modified. Most had front porches and didn't have an A entry. Could the entry have been added later? Here's more on the foursquare with pictures. Here is a link that might be useful: foursquare

Thank you all for your responses. We did some drywall removal and here is what we found, along with some info: 1. Inside the overhang, it is made up of stacked beams. One at the bottom, two hole-filled, grade 3 lumber beams turned sideways, then three more beams. All of the beams end at the bulkhead, the top two a couple of inches deeper than the others. Some of the beams are not joined at one end, the other or not at all (see photo). And when I say "joined," I mean with a single nail. 2. The wall that is between the cabinets is hollow--no wood beyond the framing. No horizontal beams inside, either. 3. We going to check with a neighbor who removed his wall to find more info. I had forgotten that this had already been done in another unit. 4. The entire floor (it's an open floor plan) is 25' x 16', including a half-bath and stairs, so there could be walls bearing weight in those areas. It's a three-story townhome with a very small footprint. 5. bdpeck-charlotte, it is pretty heinous. It was probably some swanky architectural detail in 1991. I figure we'll probably be cringing at "exposed" hvac in faux lofts and the like in 15 years, as well. Here are some more photos: Where everything joins: The wall between the cabinets:

Great house...just like my great grandmother's. It is Victorian, cottage style, with a cross- gable roof and gingerbread trim on the front porch. Circa 1880
