A couple May garden photos

Took some photos of the rock garden awhile ago. The sun was low in the sky.

Boy is it chilly this evening. For the first time in over a year I went to an actual "event". It was a local garden club's plant sale. They had to cancel last year of course. I think everyone was happy to be back because as I waited in line for the doors to open, cars kept coming and coming. Everyone wore masks of course.

I knew exactly what I wanted, I always make a bee line for the Solomon's Seal and any anemones club members are sharing. Saw familiar faces with lots of hellos and how-are-yous. To be honest, I was glad to be there but anxious too amidst the crowd. Got what I came for and left.

Glad you liked the photos Debra and Jan! Debra - I really enjoyed the open garden tour, but I can't imagine having to deadhead a thousand daylilies! If you're interested, I have some more long shots of the garden that I didn't post because you can't see the daylilies that well, but you can see the overall layout better. I just got Mystic Mariner last fall and this is it's first season here, but I think it's going to be a favorite for me too! I hope All American Baby blooms for you - it's another of my favorites. I sometimes wish they were bigger too, but they are very cute the size they are. Juliet

I don't know what Euphorbia this is, but it occasionally seeds, though not to any great degree. It is unfussy and tidy, and provides a nice foliage contrast to the other plants in this bed. From Late May 2014 False Solomon's seal, Smilacina racemosa, volunteered here, probably from seeds in the soil we moved in to level off the bed. I like it at this time of year, but later in the summer it gets a bit ratty in the sun. I need to move it to a shadier spot where it will remain ornamental when the weather heats up. From Late May 2014 My Halesia is fading now, but it while it is blooming the bees love it. This one is more of a shrub than a tree because it froze back to the snow line several times when it was young, so it has many low branches. From Late May 2014 The bed along what was an old barn foundation. From Late May 2014 After a rough first year between my neglecting it in a too-small pot and the voles noshing on it over the winter, this Leucosceptrum japonicum Gold Angel is glowing this season. It reminds me of a golden coleus, but is perennial. From Late May 2014 At DH's shop, the redbud and a Viburnum burkwoodii bloom at the same time. The underplanting of woodland phlox hasn't gotten large enough to show yet, but I am hoping for a haze of lavender under the redbud in future years. Nekobus - technically I'm in zone 6, but I won't plant anything unless it is hardy to zone 5. This is a "dwarf" columbine - it's only 6" tall at most. The rest of my columbines barely have blossoms on them yet! (Oh - we need 2 or 3 more posts on this thread by the end of today so that we meet my rule of 50 posts to get a May Part II thread. You can vote for a Part II thread - all those in favor, Post a Reply. All those opposed, stay silent!) The camassia - wild hyacinth - decided to open today.

Sue, i love how the lime hydrangea leaves contrast with the house. I'm currently really interested in the designing something that contrasts well with my house. Yours look fantastic. And the containers is beautiful! It's amazing how many beautiful gardens are on this forum. Thyme, the deer ate my rhododendron buds, not squirrels. Thank goodness squirrels leave them alone! Usually by now something has eaten my astilbe buds, as well, but so far I'm in for 100% flowering this year. Unbelievable! Was considering removing them if all I ever saw were munched stems. I agree with you on the Mt Laurel. Good thing you already have a husband, or surely some single gardener would agree and woo you just to get to see that every other year! Does you husband ever get jealous of the laurel? ;-) Again, so many beautiful roses. Claire, I'm always amazed at what you've managed to fit into your property. Not only is it amazing diversity, but it ll looks like every single plant is in the perfect spot. NHBabs, you have the patience of Job with your voles. I thought I had tons of voles but i've come to find out i have far more moles. I am glad as it seems they are not doing the damage voles would! There are some voles, but I don't have the damage you and others have. I wish the dianthus has lived for you. Always a delight to see your many clematis! prairiemoon, i LOVE fragrance. i have about twelve peonies planted together, and in that mass they create good fragrance. mock orange is going on the list to plant so i can enjoy the smell. After about three days of good rain, I expect my soil is rejuvenated quite deeply now. We had rain on May 18, and one downpour in early June of which I am sure some just ran off and didn't soak in, but I was still grateful. This long soaking rain was beautiful to see. Everybody I met here talked about how happy they were to see rain! Welcome, July!

Oh that is a beautiful garden! did you do the stonework yourself.?

Where is the garden? It looks like you might be a week ahead of me.

That aquilegia is gigantic...I love the tall ones and they've downsized all the ones I can find. Do you know the name or the strain of it?

You;ve created such a private space. What's on the other side of the plants screening the area?

And is that topiary?

Could you post some more photos?

Thanks for the inspiration. Needed it because I spent all day weeding and looking at a lawn that is more than half weeds. Ugly weeds.

That is wild columbine I brought from the woods on my Dad's cabin property many, many years ago. The mother plant is no more, but it's offspring appears here and there around the property, not just the garden. I do end up pulling quite a few young plants as they can become a nuisance.

Yes, I did the stone work myself including laying the natural stone pavers over 35yrs. ago.

I made the topiaries using boxwood - a tea pot and a tea cup. They are both due for a first trim.

As of now, the most of the Spring blooms are finished in the other borders around the courtyard, so not much to see until later this month thru July.

Wow, what a beautiful space you've built!

I'm also a fan of natural stone, and I know how hard it is to get things just right. Your work is amazing. The naturalized plants are just the right touch!

BTW, I feel just the same way as you do about being around people. It feels good and bad at the same time - but overall it's nice to see things improving. Glad you got your plants and got to see some garden friends. Well done!

I really like seeing stone (lots of stone) in a garden; low walls. steps etc.
