Hi, looks quite promising and I like the pot, however I would take a breadknife and slide it down all the sides, stick a finger in the drain hole and get the whole thing out to check the roots. Even if they're not yet too large for the pot, I might want to get it into a wider pot, possibly a bit shorter - unless you are happy with the pot, and the roots don't need help (yet). When you repot, gently (it's hard!) try to spread the rootball outward from the bottom - not radically, and try not to tear a lot of roots, but it'll be a start at shortening it up somewhat and encouraging lateral growth. Also, if you are comfortable, see if the soil needs more grit (probably does) and add a bunch, possibly also some bark (it's chunky but soft, so break up some pieces) from a bag of Orchid Mix (Schultz is good). If you need help find a local club and bring your tree, some aquarium gravel (for now), the bark and a new pot along so you can see how it's done.

Wow! Thank you everyone, for all of your input. I would love to move my dwarf hinoki cypress but I fear that it may not survive. As a precaution, I want to try propagating some pieces before attempting to move it. Yes, it is rather slow growing but over the years I have trimmed off some of the top growth to keep it shorter - but it really is in the wrong spot now. The soil where it is growing is rather sandy, with good drainage. It gets good morning sun with afternoon shade. I am going to collect some cuttings and attempt to propagate them now. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for roots to appear and what should I look for so that I don't disrupt the plant while it is developing a root system? At what point will I know to remove the plant from the plastic bag? Chris

It may yet reward you with a nice plant, keep it in clean water for now till the roots grow past the stem anyway. Try to keep it 70 degrees or higher if you can. Keep checking it. The leaves at their base look healthy. Fred when Rooted the tops in Florida (so long ago now), I cut the top row of fruit off and plunked it down in the water. The fruit always rotted away, you had to change the putrid water every day, which usually was so bad it would start to foam slightly. That is the way you did it back then, of course it was always 80 degrees or higher with 80% humidity. But it worked! The only trouble I ever had was with the dratted squirrels eating chunks out of the ripening fruit! 3 years of waiting and then some scurvy grey squirrel eats the very first spot to ripen and the whole fruit then rots!
