High on (off) the hog

We often hear this salty expression used to refer to someone who has achieved a full, prosperous life. “Old Tom surely is living high on the hog these days.” The expression is quite literally accurate, since you to go pretty high on the hog to get the tender – and expensive – loin chops and roasts.
