I second ycmahesh's opinion on weed mat and on stone mulch - bark is a much better alternative. Just keep all mulch away from the crowns of the plants to avoid rotting them. A soil test is always a good investment. This is a case of "do as I say, not as I do", though, as lots of gardeners skip this step - I know I have not had as many soil tests done as I should have had. You did not mention which direction this bed faces - is it to the north, south, east, or west of your house? Is it in full sun, part sun, mostly shade? Are there gutters on your house, and what kind of roof overhang do you have - is part of this bed under an overhang? Please reconsider the depth of the bed - 20 x 4 is too narrow and may look surprisingly skimpy. If you can get close to a 1 to 3 ratio, and at least 6 feet deep, it will be much better looking and will allow you more flexibility to have a variety of plant sizes. The 3' closest to the house may be *very* dry, and you need to leave some space for access to the side of the house for various tasks like painting, residing, window glazing ... these activities wreak havoc on a garden, and contractors (or relatives) will not understand that they're breaking your heart when they tromp on the soil. Instead of plastic weed barrier, you can use newspaper under bark mulch; you can fold it up so pieces fit between newly planted perennials; when the time comes to move things around the paper will have decomposed. The newspaper will last long enough to smother the bits of grass that are trying to re-sprout, if you make them about 3 pieces thick. Since you don't have time for a lasagna bed, you may want to remove the sod with a flat spade and put it into a compost bin for later use. This works better than tilling it into the soil, because the clumps will resprout at an alarming rate. The depth to which you need to till will vary - here we sometimes have hardpan under the soil, sometimes not. If you run into fast-draining sand under your soil, you can leave it alone. I sometimes dig down about 2' but only if I'm including plants like peonies (which will be there for decades) or if I'm using plants that need really good drainage. This is about the maximum ever needed for perennials, I think, and you can easily get away with half that, maybe less. But! ... you get only one chance to start a new bed, so make the most of it. I don't use purchased top soil in beds, as it tends to be of uneven quality and full of weed seeds. I mix in lots of organic amendments with the local soil - aged manure, compost, leaf mould, coffee grounds, whatever I can get. Peat moss can be a problem, and you might want to research that before you use it. Keep us posted, please; this sounds like a fun project.

Fun new pics, all! Thanks for taking the time and effort to share them with everyone! So fun! I love the water lilies and Salvia greggii. I had both in my last garden here and really should have them in my current place. I should remedy that situation, LOL. Awesome pipevine caterpillar pic too, I've heard of them but have never actually seen one (I grew lots of A. fimbriata in my last garden here but never got any caterpillars, grumble grumble, LOL). Neat stuff! Love your veggie pic too, Devonfawn, looks nice! Nice moringa (aka "drumstick") plants too. I just sowed seeds about three weeks ago and have some nice young plants too. Now to find a place for them in the garden! My little garden has gotten FOUR very deep, heavy soakings in the last ten days. It's been amazing. My 75 gallon rain barrel is overlowing over and over and over. I wish I had two this monsoon season! This morning my Echinopsis 'Los Angeles' made a bloom along with several buds (tennis ball to show size) and my stinky (truly vile smelling, makes me laugh) Hoodia gordonii has been blooming all week. Hi! I love PA and its history. I lived out in the eastern part of the state for a while and the Harley Davidson plant is pretty cool...so are the little towns of Amish (as suggested above). If you're heading up to Erie (Presque Isle is GREAT!!!!) you could hit Oil City and check out the great old mansioins and museums. If you're heading north, check out the Allegheny Nat'l Park, too...there are tons of great places to stay for a night in a cabin on the lake. If you head south, you can always hit the city of Pittsburgh and take in the history there. The science center, station square, museums and strip district are always fun...even for those of us born and raised out here!!!!!!! You could always hit the PS grand canyon, too...heard it is beautiful! Hope you enjoy the trip and I can't wait to hear where you went!!! Take care and journey safe! ~k

The best vinyl shops are in the Lower Haight, a pretty funky but fun area. Jack's Record Cellar and Rooky Ricardo's have been around since I moved here 27 years ago. From there, you can walk west about about eight blocks to Upper Haight where all the hippie shops are. On your way from Lower to Upper Haight, turn right on Pierce Street to stop at Mickey's Monkey, a funky used stuff store. Then walk two more blocks down Haight and turn right on Divisadero. 1 1/2 blocks down on the left is a store called The Other Shop. It has mostly mid century mod stuff with some fun vintage clothes in the back. Golddust mentioned the Goodwill at Mission and S. Van Ness. There is another one in the Upper Haight. The Mission District has several used bookstores and another great thrift store called Community Thrift on Valencia Street. Actually, the Mission District may be fun for both daughters. Used bookstores, used and new hip clothing stores, galleries with works by young artists very influenced by Japanese pop culture, Clarion Alley murals (see link below), and a comfortable lesbian presence on Valencia Street. As marti8a found out, the Mission Street bus can be real (ahem) urban experience. I would recommend taking a cab or BART. You can easily rent a car from downtown for a day to go to Muir Woods.
