Things to do/see in Northern New Mexico

I may have the opportunity to go to upper New Mexico later this spring. Cimarron, Taos... that area.

Anyone have any places to visit or stay?

Let's hope Ron sees this - he should have some good ideas.

I don't now how much time you'll have or how far you might be willing to travel. But if you can, try to visit Chaco Canyon - it's in Northwestern New Mexico in the Four Corners area. Santa Fe is a favorite of mine, it's a charming town and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains are just outside town. The sunsets alone are worth the trip.

I love Taos.

Orlandos is our favorite restaurant there. It has awesome New Mexican food. Michael's Kitchen is also really good. We went there for lunch, but breakfast is supposed to be even better.

I always love to go shopping in Taos. There are lots of neat little shops. Taos is a place where we mainly stop for the shopping and food when we're driving through the area. We've camped a lot in NM and we have driven a lot of places just to see what is there. It's beautiful and very scenic.

A good place to look out is the Rio Grande Gorge. It's a quick stop. Hope you aren't afraid of heights.

We like to drive down and look at the St. Francis de Asis church in Rancho de Taos. It's another quick stop. There is a restaurant in the plaza behind the church that is really good and also serves New Mexican food.

The Taos Pueblo is a big attraction for tourists. I didn't care for the experience. I felt it was too commercialized.

Cimarron is very isolated. We camped at a campground there 8 or 9 years ago. I don't remember there being much of a town there. Once again, the drive was very scenic.

I don't how much traveling you plan on doing. There's a lot to see in New Mexico, but it's a lot of driving. Depending upon the scope of your trip, I could probably recommend some other places.

I doubt you'll see Taxodium mucronatum in large numbers on the trip. At least, as I recall, they're south of the rio grande. My favorite spot for general scenery along the deep south route of I-10 is the Atchafalaya Basin. Google image search it :-). There's only one or two exits near the actual basin to go look see, but the area is awesome. The live oaks in NOLA (most of them) are still around and great to see (Garden District / Audubon ). Mobile, before Frederick in 1979 or so had some great live oaks. I was just a little kid then, but I remember the moss and the storm (and tornadoes that spawned in it) taking lots of them out.). If you look close, depending on the time of year, the staggering amount of mimosa visible will make you angry. (Mostly a problem a little north of I-10, like middle deep south, but a serious creeping invasive) (If you watch the History Channel Show, Ax Men, there's a Swamp Logger down Atchafalaya way who's a character on the show. You can see the terrain and Shelby's exploits. He reminds me too much of my ex inlaws, but the scenery down there is primordial at times. He's also a recovery logger, FWIW.) Thanks again for all the advice guys. The pool table is definitely a bad idea. I was lucky to get rid of it the first time, why would I be dumb enough to buy it back? You are right, it is more of a guy thing, it does take up a lot of space, and in todays world, video games are definitely the better choice for family entertainment. I never thought of some of those ideas, and I thank you for sharing them with me. It is also not the greatest idea to leave the lawnmower behind either. I also never thought about the lawnmower reminding people there is yardwork - good idea. This is a section relating to house selling. I feel bad that this post has recieved so much attention when I originally just wanted a couple simple answers - and it has metamorphasized into this mess! A lot of that is my own stupid fault. I tend to read things, take them the wrong way, and then I have to respond and "defend" myself - when I was never under attack to begin with. Then I read things again, realize things were NOT as malicious as I originally thought, and then think Duh! Why did I get upset by that? Well this is yet another of my Duh! moments - and I apologize. Yes Brickeyee, I can be a very good kettle, and yes badgergrrl, I can also be a grumpy old man - thank you for not calling me something worse. I really am a nice guy, but often I find myself in this predicament. So again - sorry! As if you can't tell, I have a hard time letting things go. I went through a real nightmare attempting to sell my house before, and I am dreading having to go through it again. I am also dreading whatever repairs and cleaning I will need to do after the tenant moves out just to get the house ready again. This is still 1 1/2 months away, and I am already getting stressed out over it. All I want is to get rid of the house, do it quickly and easily, and without being financially raped in the process - a whole lot easier said than done. So this is why I am the way I am - I am carrying a lot of stress relating to the whole house thing. Thanks again for the good advice and thank you for understanding what I am going through. I know it is ultimately up to me to figure these things out, and no matter what you guys say, you can't really fix things for me. You are total strangers, but it still helps me having some sort of outlet for me to voice my concerns - to people who might understand me. Thanks again. Have a good day.

Check with a native heritage center. Certain Native American cultures in that area have an aversion to cameras. They believe it can capture their soul and doom them to wander aimlessly in eternity after death. It is a fate they dread. Those folks do not permit their picture to be taken and will hide their face from the camera. It can create a nasty event if you try to snap a candid picture of someone without first asking or determing the beliefs of that person. Please respect their culture.

If you get into North Eastern New Mexico, near Raton Pass where I-25 goes into Colorado, be absolutely sure to go to the Capulin Volcano National Monument.

I was out there on business (NRA Whittington Center is in that area) back in the early 1990s and absolutely fell in love with the South West, but Capulin was probably the most incredible thing I have ever seen/done in my life.

You drive up the side of the extinct volcano and park near the top.

There's a hiking trail around the top of the cone, about 1 mile in diameter, and you can also take a trail down into the cone.

That one was a problem for me. I was not acclimated to the lack of air. I got down into the crater and didn't think I was going to make it back out!

The views on a clear day are simply incredible.
