Home office / homeschool / clutter....yikes!
Comments (34)Thanks Talley, it is good to know I am not alone. It drives me crazy when I do spend hours cleaning, only to have DH come home and move something centimeters. Or I haven't touched something all day, and he will come home and move it. AAARRGH. Just leave it alone!!! Now to the office. I do have a good 2 drawer filing cabinet I think we got from an office that was moving, but it is full! Although I am sure it needs to be cleaned out. Right now we have a corner computer desk that has really no storage. Everything is on the top of the desk, cubbies, in baskets, paper, paper everywhere! I do research for a coupon website and am the secretary for the music boosters at the high school, so there is a lot of paper. Just need a better filing system. I do have in the closet a cabinet that right now houses lots of craft stuff that I haven't used in forever. I am thinking about taking that out, cleaning it out and repurposing it. Maybe paint and a little molding, a cork board on the front, baskets and labels inside... I need a real desk with drawers to put stuff away. I have 4 different rolly carts with different size drawers for various and sundry things. One holds kids school supplies I try to always have on hand so there is no running to the store in the middle of the night! Buy them in Aug/Sept when they are cheap! Then I have all my fabric, I make flannel rag quilts for friends then use the scraps to make blankies for preemies. Have lots of flannel remnants, need to get that in line. Ok, now I am stressing, just need to concentrate on one thing at a time. Today it is the paper work on the floor. Once I can get through that it won't be so bad. Thanks again, Laura...See MoreRounding out the contemporary/tropical bedroom/home office
Comments (2)This is just my opinion. I personally like a lot of colour so I’d probably change the duvet colour for some lush tropical print but I get the idea behind the white so it’s fine. Laundry hamper: sorry, I think it’s hideous and really jars with what you’re trying to achieve. Toss it and replace it with baskets type hampers like these or similar. I quite like the bar cart and think it works well with your tropical/Indian theme. Marble does not and neither do those thin pointy legs on the tables you like. Something like the bar cart in style but smaller would work. At the same time I’d move the lamp stand to the corner between the bar stand and the side wall. It’s a cool lamp but where it is gives the impression of a vulture overhanging the bed. For bedside lamps something with a shade similar to the main lamp would look “together”. The round mirror is the wrong size/shape for over the bed. If you want something over the bed (why a mirror?) I’d go for a long rectangular print you like, or move the print you already have there and put the mirror between the two doors where the print currently is. Or you could put your full length mirror there. I’m not sold on the idea of having all the artwork at the same height but matching frames would pull it all together. I think the frame you have on the Daybreak print works well so I’d go with that. You could change the chair for something similar in a tan/gold I think. Plant stands are a good idea but the ones you have chosen don’t work with your theme IMO. Something more like these in a lighter wood is more tropical/Indian I think. Put the plants in brass pots like this. I think the main issue I have with the things you have chosen is that they are more Swedish minimalist than tropical which is a bit more lush. You need to decide which it is that you really want....See MoreAdding a gable to a rectangular house. Center it or off center?
Comments (64)Thanks for the kind words. I agree that your house is going to be great. The truss you posted does not "cantilever" since its supported at each end; it just doesn't have a continuous bottom chord. Because of the tall porch, the elevation is a bit deceptive. I now realize that this house will have a large footprint so if a porch is under the span of the roof, its possible a truss is the only way the roof can be framed without the use of very deep engineered rafters and/or intermediate supports and foundations. Such framing options would depend greatly on the floor plan. I would be looking for ways to allow skylight shafts to fit between the trusses. Maybe its as simple as doubling up trusses either side of a skylight....See MoreWhat series have you watched more than once (f/up to movies)
Comments (75)Another vote for The Wire as best TV show ever, and we have rewatched that, with our DD, when she was in 8th grade or so, but we don’t watch many series, although if we run out of options, I would rewatch The Americans and when I’m old and fully retired, I’d like to watch Better Call Saul and then Breaking Bad so I can compare and contrast what they got right in the prequel. We also rewatched a few seasons of Hill Street Blues and WKRP (I happened on the DVDs in a thrift shop) and they held up remarkably well, considering they are, ahh, of a certain vintage. Growing up reruns were on daily, and I’ve seen every epidose of MASH, Hogan’s Heros, Cheers, Beverly Hillbillies and the like a 100 times over, that’s what happens when the TV was always on, not something I’ve ever wanted to replicate, that’s why I’m a ”one and done” for the most part (The Wire being the notable exception)....See Morebpath
