Five rants - Hope this is the right place.
Comments (5)For those of us who live on rural routes and get our packages left in outdoor mailboxes, it isn't always possible to "be there" when they arrive---and Delivery Confirmation doesn't mean the carrier will hold onto the package until he or she can put it in your hands. They merely confirm the date they leave it in your mailbox, so---plants DO freeze, alas! I agree about the dry cuttings lament. Here's a good suggestion for shipping cuttings during the COOLER months---DO NOT try this during summer! Completely seal the cuttings inside a large Zip-loc bag. This keeps the humidity high (which is why it will kill cuttings when it's hot!). As for the no response thing---the e-mail system here at GW sucks. If at all possible, I find it's best to use some other system. "For postage"---when I just don't want to be asked this question, I state in my post that I will not send plants for postage. Yes, some people DO still ask, but I just ignore them. As for Number Five---see reply Number One. I have had my postal carrier admit to erroniously delivering my package to someone else, days before. She's honest enough to tell me, and the person she did deliver it to was honest enough to give it back to her, but---that won't always be the case....See MoreAnyone else love watering?
Comments (6)I love to water, I love to swim, I love to kayak. If it has to do with water I probably like it. And if I disappear for a day, my family knows I'm proably drove over to the "big lake" (Lake Michigan). I don't have drip irrigation and usually hand water instead of setting an overhead sprinkler or moving soaker hoses around. I enjoy it alot. I think it is because it gets me close to each planting and I have time to really look at them and see new growth, ripe fruit, pests, and disease. Afterwards, I feel like I really know what is going on in my garden. Can't say that I've ever thought about the veggies and trees appreciating my efforts, though. If my garden were larger I might feel differently about watering. And once in a while when I have to water late in the evening, the mosquitoes wreck the fun. And one hose fitting that kept leaking all over me caused trouble til I finally gave up on fixing it and got a different hose :) I've heard many people enjoy weeding and do not like watering. That is almost incomprehensible to me. I weed because I have to and get almost no enjoyment from that task. Watering and harvesting are the two things I enjoy most in the garden. I can't understand how anyone wouldn't enjoy harvesting, but, again, I know some people who don't like that part....See MoreDo you ever feel like you are dreaming?
Comments (22)Charliedawg - that was funny about the toilets. I went yesterday with the builder to pick out the faucets and we ended up at Lowes. I talked the guy into giving us a discount on one of them because they had it marked two different prices. Then I asked him if he was giving us a 10% discount for buying so much stuff as we were. When the guy walked off to adjust the price the builder looked at me and said "I need to bring you shopping with me more often". LOL! We ended up not getting the Roman Tub faucet because I ran out to the car and looked it up on Ebay and I got it for $75 rather then $178! I was happy :-) I had planned on buying all of them on Ebay but we needed these ASAP. Anyway, seems things are really picking up and I LOVE it! I hope we are able to get most of the things picked out in the next week as DH will be gone and I (keeping fingers crossed) could be starting a new job in the next two weeks!!!! I am off to buy birthday presents. DD is turning 8 on Saturday and we are having a water slide party. DD invited the whole class and I am thinking holiday weekend, half the class will show up. NO!! They are all coming but ONE! I will need to have my head examined shortly. Kelly...See MoreForm OVER Function?
Comments (9)Susie- What you're calling form, I think is function, at least partly. You can't see the breakfast room, from the kitchen...and there is no where for people to converse, in the kitchen. Those are two of the big reasons people remodel their space! Are you going to be solving these problems, with the remodel? Will you have a more open kitchen? Will this let in more light? Will it be a more cheerful place to be working in? This goes back to your form, which impacts your function. Knotty pine walls are dark...and it probably feels like they're sucking all the light and air out of the room. Bad floors are hard to clean, making the kitchen more difficult to maintain. Old and ugly windows are probably blocking more light and are no fun to spend time around...same problem with the old cabinets. They are probably also harder to keep clean. It sounds like you need a make-over that will bring light, air, space and joy into your kitchen. You do a lot of work in the kitchen, so why not make it a cheerful, fun place to spend your time. You want people to visit with you in the kitchen...they want a cheerful, fun, inviting space to be in, too. So, I don't think you're picking form over function...I think your form is impacting your function. And remember, any kitchen style can be functional, with the proper planning and storage. So, you have probably already posted this, but do you have a plan, for your new kitchen? Are you opening up the spaces? I'd love to see the details :)...See Morerifis (zone 6b-7a NJ)
