The clematis are in several phases of blooming this Ruguchi is one that covers itself with these little blue bells and does it all summer.

This bloom is as large as a clematis bloom...known as a cabbage rose, name is Paul Neyron

Ballerina along the fence to the right. Souvenir de la Malmaison to the left, Cardinal de Richelieu is the deep purple center left; it is really not happy here in heat, but the fragrance! Red is William Shakespeare 1200, and the huge flowering blob on left is a Noisette. this one will be almost totally covered by blooms in a day or two and the fragrance of all the oldies is fabulous.

Thanks gardenerme and jenn :-) Yes, Vista is a really great climate, very temperate, and for the most part we just miss the the marine layer since we're up at about 900 ft. elevation (up in the hills). And yes, the cherries will most certainly produce! They are fairly new low-chill varieties from Dave Wilson Nursery that were specifically developed for our area. If you search the Fruit & Orchard Forum, I think there's a thread that provides a report on them from the coastal S. California area that was a "two thumb's up". They are Minnie Royal and Royal Lee. They cross pollinate each other. I'm really excited about them, actually, and they are VERY happy in my climate. Pretty pleased! I was so happy to see your picture of 'Early Days' since I just planted mine last week from Blue Ridge....I am now even more delighted that I got it! I hope mine will look as good as yours when & if it blooms this year. According to Bob Selman it is a very reliable bloomer. I love the bicolor bloomers and couldn't afford 'Clown Parade', so I opted for 'Early Days' as a much cheaper alternative. (under ten dollars versus close to a hundred!) Thanks for showing your pretty pictures.

Andrea - Thanks for sharing those lovely pictures. I love all of them, but there are a few I have always wanted to try myself and yours are gorgeous, Mojave, Mikado and Mon Cheri. Your St. Patrick really is green, it looks pretty though. I like your Dick Clark, I planted an own root one this spring and am glad to know yours is doing good.

Beautiful! I especially like Paul Neyron. We used to grow that variety.

I have never seen a bluebird until last summer. They seem to be making a comeback in Indiana.

Beautiful pics Kay. I'll bet those roses scent the entire neighborhood.

Nancy: I had a beautiful clump of Coral Sunset peony when we lived in NYS. I dug it out last fall and gave some to my daughter and daughter-in-law along with a couple of others before we sold the house. My daughter sent me a pic the other day showing one clump of peony already had buds. I think it will be Coral Sunset as it was always the first to bud and bloom in my old garden.

Love all the springtime pictures!! Kay, your roses are so pretty and to have the fragrance too is wonderful. My Summer Romance Rose is covered in blooms and its fragrance is so good. Love the bluebird picture. Nancy, your peonies are also pretty. And I bet your iris are really showing out now.

Thank you for looking and commenting. Nancy, Paul Neyron's huge blooms and sweet fragrance are always so welcome here. Kate, I think the reason knock-out roses don't appeal to me like the old garden roses is their lack of scent though their blooms are nice and my spouse loves the red ones sp I planted one for him. I am not a great peony gardener, Julis although I do love them and I did manage to have a bloom this time. I think our heat is one factor but I suspect I am at fault since I have lost a couple of them. Spring has been quite pretty here but summer will shut off some of the perfume and the almost ethereal beauty of springtime. Again, I thank you for your comments. Julia, you should be able to get a piece of your clematis back soon since you shared it.

kay - I enjoyed the garden walk, complete with Papa Bluebird. The fragrance of those old garden roses must be marvelous!

Thank you, Debra. The rose fragrance is one of my favorite parts of spring. When you get near the rose areas, you immediately are surrounded with the gentle fragrance .

Your OGR's are looking great. I had a rose friend who enjoyed all types of roses (500 and counting), but those OGR's were her favorites. She, like you, loved how fragrant some of them were. I favored the modern roses (Hybrid Teas, Floribundas etc.) but did grow one OGR (Rose De Rescht) for many years. When climate conditions were to its liking, it could be quite fragrant.......Nice to see a live Bluebird. We've only seen one out this way and it was found dead in the street. Sad sight..........Nancy: I like your Peonies too. A little too hot for some of them around here, but I do like the flowers on those that do well when they bloom.....Maryl

Thanks, Maryl. Rose de Resch is a lovely rose, but one I don't have. I have a few hybrid teas, but most of yjr, qre OGRs. Until I put up a bluebird house, I only rerely saw bluebirds, but the plain (extremely) bluebird house is their pick and there are three to four nests of babies every year. They have actually even nested in the "See Rock City" birdhouse. I got a phot of Mama bird with a worm yesterday. These parents are suspicious of me, but the least suspicious of any Ihave had in the nest, thus the photos.
