What would cause Asparagus to be 1-2 inches thick, when it emerges?

THE CIMPLE CO

I have had this asparagus patch for many years, and I keep it well fertilized and watered. Each year I get great quality asparagus that is mild and tasty. However, this year they started emerging at around two inches thick, and now after a couple weeks they are 'down' to one inch thick or so.

We had a very mild winter (in Utah), and we received almost now snow. It also keeps getting warm, and then cold again (70 one week, and 30 the next).

I'm not sure what would cause this, and I have never seen anything like it. Most of my fellow experienced gardeners have never seen this ether, and the problem is usually the opposite (where the they are too thin, and folks want them thicker).
