My new Patio Fairy Garden

In case you don't know, I moved twice last year. My job transferred me and it was just easier to move to Springfield rather than drive back and forth. The first apartment I lived in, was owned by my boss. I thought it was a good set up. But, the neighbors were horrible!! They destroyed my pretty plants! They threw their cigarette butts on them and their used pipes with Lord only knows what. I was sure I'd lose all of my Hostas. But, a few did come back. El Nino, Wheee!, and Stir Fry are thriving. Unfortunately, I did lose Halcyon (which I've had almost 10 years). I searched and searched nursery's for another with no luck, but I did find Halcyon twin, Forbidden Fruit. I bought it yesterday!!

Unfortunately, Fire Island and Undulata Albomarginata (also long timers with me, are in decline) I will put them in nursery pots to see if I can get them going again.

June is looking good, though.

My neighbors now are much better! I moved in late August.

Brandy, your nice little patio area is perfect for your plants Which are looking good! Fire Island looks like it has 3 eyes, is that less then before? If it’s been in that pot for awhile, it might time to remove it and see how the roots are. It could be that they are root bound in that pot and another larger pot would help. Same with the Undulata which are generally easy to grow. Maybe a new world bring it back, although it doesn’t look bad to me, it may have some leaf color instability.

Also, Halcyon is a very old and terrific hosta (see my post just below). “I thought I would share this here) which talks about the line from which Halcyon was developed. Also, if you look in the Library under Halcyon, you will see how many plants developed from Halcyon. It’s amazing. The stores don’t carry it because they are generally interested in the most recent hostas and hostas of the year, to which Halcyon belongs........can’t remember the year.

If you want Halcyon many of the online venders sell it. Several are linked on the front page of the Library.

Naylor Creek hosta nursery, good quality plants and favorite of many forum members, Maple Creek Dayliles ( they sell hostas, daylilies and companion plants,

Thanks but I don't really like doing online for plants. I'm "old school" I like to be able to see and touch and pick which one I buy. Online, you're kind of left at the mercy of the vendor and the delivery and weather often.

Purplemoon, Thank you for the sweet welcome! And thank you so much for that link. What a wonderful compilation of art---just amazing! Just as I expected, I was still up looking at the GJ Inspiration Album when I noticed the time -- 2:20 A.M. ! I didn't just look at the photos. I enlarged, cropped, magnified just so I could inspect every detail up to page 9. (guess you know what I'll be doing tonight when the family settles in and I have the computer all to myself. LOL) I had spent the last few weeks reorganizing, pulling out, moving, transplanting, changing focal points and now I have a whole brain full of new ideas thanks to all of you who have posted photos! I have an album at PhotoBucket but it only includes nicer areas of the gardens. Never dreamed anyone would be interested in my camping coffee pot or tennis shoes planters! I'll have to start taking new pictures and this time include what I used to think was "my way of saving the landfills and me being thrifty --- and anyway, who wants to see dirty white tennis shoes planted?". That's what I used to think, now I've found this board! Also, more about me --- other than a few 4", 6" and 8" clay pots to use as starters, there isn't a pot or plant stand in the backyard that I've ever paid for. I love curb shopping!

As others will probably suggest, water when the soil is dry to a knuckle. If your climate is warm/hot/dry, I'd probably suggest daily watering for a few weeks for such small plants(very small root zones), but it also depends how quickly your soil drains, etc. Generally smallish conifers can probably go a couple days between watering in warm/hot conditions but unless you're in a heavy-slow draining clay, they can probably be watered daily with no ill effects. Ooh, Dara - how exciting! I'd never heard of the Heritage Rose Australia before - I must look it up! I would love to join fellow rose lovers and view gardens on the tour - perhaps not the whole thing but certainly the part in Perth. (And thank you so much for the compliment about my garden :-) ) Marlorena - yes, that little tree is a frangipani (plumeria) - it was one of the earliest things I planted when we first moved in the house. There had been a native peppermint tree growing in that spot which inexplicably just turned brown & died, so I had to replace it - and a frangipani was recommended. It's got beautiful pink flowers, although it's not really fragrant. Oh, and I'll share my photos of John Clare next! :-) Karen - I love that phrase "fat and sassy" - haha! And yes, Golden Celebration has one of my favourite fragrances. I think Jude is my favourite, followed by Golden Celebration and Windemere. Ingrid - we get hardly any rain in the summer months but we do get rain in winter - so I think that's more than you? It must be so hard for you to cope with the drought conditions. We do have water restrictions in summer - we're only allowed to run the drip irrigation twice a week - but we can water by hand as much as we like, and in the last month, I've been out there almost every day carrying buckets of collected waste water from the kitchen & bathroom out to the roses. Rosylady - yes, I think you're right! I'm very lucky that the previous owners chose the light stone walls and had the house painted white. It's actually brick but covered with a white plaster coating, and it does keep everything light and bright. In fact, in mid-summer, I find it a bit too dazzling to look out sometimes as the sun reflects off the walls and there's a terrible glare. But it does help all the colours stand out! ~ HY

Actually Sandyslopes, I had a couple early season catastrophes... Not due to plants on rails, but hanging basket being blown down. I learned put nails in at an angle and use the heavy duty ones. No problems since! The rail is quite wide and none of the pots are larger than the rail, so that helps and they're heavy, too. So very sturdy and secure!

That is so true, but how will you get enough Hostas from just buying at retail? I like the pot stands too, but also $$ you could have spent on more Hosta.

That doesn't look like Forbidden Fruit at all nor is it a twin to Halcyon. Perhaps you lucked out and got a mislabeled Halcyon.
