Too late for bare roots?

DA sent me my first two orders of roses two weeks ago but for some reason left out my third order (as well as all the mycorrhizal). They said they have it scheduled it ship this coming week, but all my existing roses here are budding and the bare roots have all started growing. It seems extremely late to be planting bare roots in May in zone 7....any thoughts?

I have the same issue. My one DA rose arrived yesterday (they never put in the order for the second rose I requested), and it looks like it was in storage for a long time. All my other roses are budding out and one is blooming. Temps will be in the 80’s this weekend. Still, I expect it to be fine as I have it potted and in the shade for now. If I was planting it in the garden, I would put something over it to shade it and put pine straw up over the canes part way to keep them from drying out and the light starved new growth from burning.

I'm having a similar issue. They left out one of the roses from my order that came a month ago. The latest update is that it will arrive some time in May. My roses are on the edge of blooming now (I'm eagerly awaiting a full opening! ) I'll remember to give it some shade (with shade cloth) when it first arrives and hope for the best. Presuming your soil drains as it should and holds sufficient moisture, I would suggest mounding your bare roots with planting mix. Cover the bud union and canes so only the top inch or two protrude from the mulch. It may be easier if you take corrugated cardboard and cut it into strips which will permit you to create a cylinder large enough to slide over the canes of the plant. You want it tall enough to be sunk into the ground an inch or two and cover the tops of the canes. Fill this will a loose mulch or planting mix and keep it moist. Your bare roots may be struggling to retain enough moisture to remain alive, so they possibly aren't getting enough to actually grow. By keeping them dark, cool and damp, they have a better chance of absorbing the moisture they need to grow. Those conditions encourage root growth. Warm, dry, sunny conditions favor cane and foliage grow, which is an intense stress on plants which haven't already developed feeder roots. Soaking them for several days in a bucket of water prior to planting also helps. You want to water the cylinders to keep the planting mix damp. If it settles and exposes more of the plants, add more mix and water more. You only want the top inch or two of the canes exposed until new growth begins from the cane ends. As they begin developing, you can begin gradually removing the planting mix from the cylinders so you acclimate the plant to the hotter, drier, more extreme conditions. Kim

Go ahead and order it cause if you order it in the spring it will be gone. When you get it, take it out of the wrapper it came in and dig a big hole in a flowerbed and bury it for the winter. Don't forget to mark where you put it. Then in the spring plant it. It will be just as green as the day you put it in the ground. I've been doing this for years.

Someone here regularly points out there’s nothing to lose with an iffy DA order, given the long ironclad guarantee. I’ve never dealt with them. You could argue “loss of a growing season” if you had a containerized rose ready to go in the spot.

Can you plant the latecomer in a pot, waiting on in ground for a better time? That way if you get a heat wave you can bring it inside for a bit.

I always grow my new roses in pots for the first 1-3 years, until they comfortably fill a 5-gallon pot. Only then do they go out into the garden....

At this time of year I don't plant ANY new plants other than veggies.

But I live in a climate where the summers are very hot and dry; in areas with reliable summer rains it may be different.
