I'm no tree expert, and not qualified to diagnose your problem, but the greenish haze looks a lot like the green algae that grows on cedar fences when they are in total/near shade. I had a bunch of oleanders on the Gulf Coast shading the cedar fence in my back yard and it looked just like that. But cedar fences are dead wood and you have a live tree.

I was told on one of my garden forums, when I asked about a greenish/whitish stuff on one side of my trees' trunks out front (in shade of taller nearby trees in neighbor's yard), that it would not harm the trees and that nothing was needed. FWIW, I currently live in Central TX, so I still have humidity and shade issues, but not as bad as on the Gulf Coast. I have done nothing to those trees and all of them are just fine.

Yeah I don't think the likely algae is a real concern, but none of my other pines have those brown spots where apparently the bark is shedding it's top layers and none are bare looking like this one. I believe I am still seeing green needles at the very top for a few feet but it seems nothing but brown after that. I cannot tell how healthy the pine cones look from this distance. You said my tree is live, but is it barely live and on it's way to dead? Are you or anyone seeing anything that looks particularly troublesome or a sign of a tree well on it's way to dying? What can I do to help this tree?

I figured you might be East Texas. That's where most of our pines live. :) I would re-post your question over on the Trees discussion board here: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/trees. They may have experience with your issue and be able to offer some suggestions.

hire a certified arborist for an onsite inpestion ... peace of mind is worth a few bucks

and this is imperative if the thing will fall on anything valuable ...

otherwise.. skip that expense and use that money for part of the removal cost ...

is essence.. this is a forest tree.. a telephone pole barely alive .. it is not a backyard tree ... its probably a danger ...

the pix are not great for us to see much of anything going on up there.. and i understand why ...

and btw.. we usually talk of harmless lichens on trees ... second link below .. algae.. excess water supporting such .. may or may not be a problem on a tree ...

Algae and lichens or moss on a tree trunk do not kill it, and this may be surprising, but trees in the forest have their trunks entirely in the shade. This pine is clearly not being shaded out with its tall canopy way up in the sunlight.

It does look like it's dying, and I may not know what it is suffering from, but some things are easily ruled out.

Take Ken's advice and pay to have an EXPERT come and examine the tree.

When a large pine like this one gets to this level of sparseness of the canopy, it's a goner. :-(

Not dead yet....but on it's way. Don't waste money on hiring an arborist......hire someone to take it down
