Not too late. I wait until mid to late May so my soil can warm up.

Yeah, not late at all if you intend to plant directly where you want them to grow. They need a soil temp of at least 60F for them to do anything other than sit there and sulk :-) I always start mine earlier in containers as my soils are unlikely to hit that until late May/early June and that just puts them too far behind.

I got my tubers last week. They're still in the box in a cool room out of sunlight. I probably won't plant them for a few weeks yet. I plant them out directly. If for some reason they suddenly start to grow like crazy, then I'll pot them up but I hardly ever have had to do that.

Excellent news....I'm not actually late. Great! Okay, well, I'll dig up my soil thermometer and figure out when is the earliest I can put them out. I suppose I could put some black plastic down to speed things up. Now I just have to figure out where they are all going to go. lol Thank you!

geez moony.. my last fer sure frost/freeeze date is second or third week of may ... so i couldnt even plant them before that ... so are you late ... heck no ... not by a month in my time ...

get them out of any plastic ... keep them as cool as you can to forestall too much growth ... and figure out when they can go outside ...

and mind you.. the corollary to starting late.. is that they will probably go down earlier in my MI .. than in your zone ...

we dont want to plant in the heat of summer.. they need to settle in and grow some roots to deal with such.. but otherwise.. all late planting does.. or means.. is that your first bloom is just a little later ... and in the grand scheme of things .. who cares ... unless you had some national garden tour coming.. and your garden would incomplete within these on the given day .. and that isnt most of us ...
