Has anybody upgraded their GE Smart Oven to air fry mode yet?

I just found out that GE Appliances is launching a software update this month that will deliver air fry mode to GE Smart Ovens currently without it. I'm pretty sure my new oven is eligible for the update. Has anybody upgraded yet? If so, how do you like it?

I thought air fry was something I could live without. But after seeing recipes for air fry Brussel sprouts, air fry cinnamon rolls, & air fry chicken sandwiches, I think I'd like it very much. It would be good for a number of things: fish, homemade pizza, crisping a batch of homemade waffles.

The upgrade is done over the SmartHQ app -- that's another thing I thought I could live without. But I actually like it. Better to get fingerprint smudges on my phone than on the oven touch screen. And I don't have to stoop, it's quick to adjust the oven or timer, & the screen is always bright.

I realize that this is an older thread, but have you upgraded and how do you like it? We've had our new oven for 3? months. Love the appliance , but the air fry is challenging. I can't seem to find much at all on YouTube other that well, it works- but not as good as a stand alone air fryer.

Interesting, thanks so much for your comment. The GE site keeps hinting that my oven *might* get the air fry upgrade, but hasn't delivered on that since I purchased it in March. Not sure why. Problems with the firmware roll out? A preference to sell other models with air fry already built in?

I like my oven a lot. I do worry a bit that firmware upgrades will glitch or change a feature I like (although the recent Turkey Mode upgrade fixed the probe, which didn't work before). So I'm on the fence about getting air fry: if it ain't broke, don't muck with it.

Why do you find the air fry feature challenging?

@Amy Cantu We've been in our house for 6 mo now and I really like the GE Monogram oven. I haven't actually used the speed oven functionality of the speed oven. Just the microwave. And even then, we just use the add 30 sec option. I need to sit down with the manual and experiment with it. Unfortunately, using the speed oven is not as simple as just turning it on. It's pretty complex. I remember when I tried the speed oven at my friend's house it was really hard, and I thought I'd need to dedicate some serious experimentation to getting it to work for me, and doubted that I would ever bother using it as an oven except for Thanksgiving, which hasn't happened yet. My motivation to learn how to use it has been even less than I expected, so I'm sorry to say I can't report back. I also haven't tried using the oven probe functionality for the oven (haven't cooked a roast yet). Need to find the oven probe along with the speed oven manual! But I have done a ton of baking and roasting of vegetables and have been pleased. We were living in a rental house with a viking range and the GE monogram oven is 1000x better than whatever model of viking oven came with the range in the rental. Much more even. I've done two cakes side by side and they came out beautifully without the need to rotate. With a sheet of cookies I notice that sometimes a corner might brown a little quicker than another corner, but not so much that I really need to worry about rotating the pan halfway through. Broiler also works great--I've been making a lot of toast to go with steak tartare and an entire pan filled with toast toast 100% evenly under the broiler--hooray!

Ann_t is correct. Most new countertop ovens will bake steam, air-fry like your regular oven but may have some added fan or low settings for dehydrating, etc. All ovens are different so watch it. Don't watch the timer. 20 years ago it was the toaster oven, countertop . These new larger ovens are no different using a smaller heat box and smaller meals more efficient. These more efficient ovens are the 'in-betwinnie' of a basic toaster oven and the massive free standing oven w/cooktop. My parents use their oven maybe twice a year. I have none of it or need it here in NY, but am paying attention as one of the varieties will be purchased for my beach home. I have a wood fired cook stove and could use an alternative side oven/countertop. (renovation needs to happen soon). I would rather have it on a shelf above the counter. I replaced a 24" 70's double wall oven with an electric all glass side door at eye level, and a steam oven below. Broiler is kick a++ on low and I can serve thanksgiving for 20 no problem. It can be a dance at times but for every day it is a perfect combo. My oven is my toaster, and every day roaster being a smaller footprint. Eye level is so nice and side door swing is easy in and out. Counter space is free of appliances. High heat is 500, low starts at 150 so great for dehydrating small batches as well. Have not had a bend-over behemoth oven for 20 years and do not miss that. What I dislike about 'air frying' using packaged previously frozen fried foods is the horrid bad habits of junk foods. Nancylane is using it with fresh ingredients to possibly replace a diet that likes fried foods. Fine for a treat less 'fried'.

So I got the air fry update last spring (GE Profile Twin Flex oven). I haven't experimented with it widely, but I was happy with the results with the things I've tried. It does do a better job at crisping than convection bake or roast, & no preheating is a nice convenience. It is not as fast as a countertop air fryer. In fact, the cooking times are more along regular baking times. But the advantage is in making family sized quantities. The first thing I tried was tater tots. I rarely bought them because I could never get them crunchy -- mushy tots are pointless -- but my husband had picked up a pack for the grandkids, so that was my test batch. They were great! Crispy & brown. It was hard to keep all the adults from eating the kids' tots, the memory of which makes me laugh a bit. Air fried "grilled" cheese sandwiches are excellent: melted cheese, crisp bread. It will be a great way to make Reubens or other grilled sandwiches. Air fried chicken thighs had a nice crisp skin & juicy meat. Looking forward to trying out salmon. Or experimenting with pork chops, which are tough to make without drying out the interior -- can I "flash air fry" them at high heat, short cooking time? A summer side dish that my guests have enjoyed are baby potatoes tossed in a little oil, garlic powder, & salt, air fried about 40 minutes. I tried an air fried ravioli appetizer. The idea has potential. I need to tweak the recipe for better results next time. Anyway, I can see that having the air fry option will be a nice tool to have in the cooking tool box. Looking forward to playing with it more when the cold weather arrives & shuts down our summer grilling.

The GE oven I wanted came with wi fi connection, so I have experimented with it just to see if it's useful. Newideas is right: if the Bertazonni has delay start & timed cook features, you won't miss an app. I suggest going to Google Play or the Apple Store & read the Smart HQ reviews -- they are mostly negative. My experience with SmartHQ: it's ok, but I can easily live without it. It needs to reconnect to my oven frequently, & remote operation, say from the grocery store parking lot, is sluggish. The oven bell is loud enough that I can hear it everywhere within my house, so that negates the app Cooking is Completed feature. Plus I'm in the habit of noting what time I start cooking, so I have a pretty good idea about remaining cook time, no need for the app to tell me. It will be a sad day when I'm too lazy to get up off my rear end to get to the oven to turn it on or off versus using my phone. And that's about all it does: turn on/off, set or adjust temp & time. GE does dangle the offer of free upgrades via the app. My oven might get an air fry feature or a Precision Cook feature in the future, judging from the ads in the app (yes, there are ads). You can use it to schedule service, & I think some services can be done remotely via the app. Sounds good in theory. But now you have to fuss with app/phone operating system compatibility, available phone storage space, & software/hardware aging woes -- all the usual tech annoyances. Will it all seem so cool in 10 years with a still perfectly good oven but with outdated computer features? Will I pay to upgrade the motherboard or cpu or whatever? An article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal says that ransomware is a huge issue now, very lucrative for hackers so they are increasingly on the prowl for targets. ETA: I am a geek. I love bells & whistles, software & hardware, new technology. So my bias would normally be in favor of smart appliances. But my connected oven -- the utility just isn't there yet.

What is different about how it functions on Air Fry vs. convection bake?

dadoes, I assume it"s a faster fan speed, uses all three heating elements, no preheating needed, & doesn't convert the baking temp from conventional temperature to convection temperature. (I think convection roast doesn't convert the temperature either, but can't swear to that.)

Might be more similar to convection broil, if you have a brand of oven with that feature. My old KitchenAid had convection broil. It used primarily the top heating coil, if course, but also used the bottom heating element in addition to the fan. It made terrific salmon -- crispy exterior, tender interior. It also spattered salmon oil all over the oven interior, but at least the salmon was perfect.

Thanks for the details. I figured the fan ran either faster or continuously instead of cycling. All the elements active boosts the temperature response. My 18yo GE Profile runs only the upper element for convection roast. 3rd element alone for multi-rack convection bake. Upper at reduced output and lower at full output for single-rack convection bake.

I finally got my air fry upgrade! It arrived this morning with a new Steak Mode. So eager to check them out, but won't get to play with them until after the Memorial Day holiday. I'm curious to see how well my Twin Flex works as an air fryer. My friend loves her countertop air fryer for veggies, fish, & also for reheating leftovers. She prefers her air fryer to her microwave for reheating leftovers -- something to test as well.
