Clean as a whistle

The whistle referred to is not one of the modern metal affairs. This whistle, like the expression itself, goes back quite a few years. In those days they were whittled out of wood, usually a reed of some sort. To produce a clear, true sound, the whistle had to be absolutely clean. And that’s how clean as a whistle came to mean spotlessly pure, absolutely without fault.
