Quarter Horses

These were originally developed by the earliest settlers in Virginia more than two hundred years ago. They got their name from the fact that, since there were no race tracks in those days, they were raced on short paths about a quarter of a mile long. Later they were crossbred with thoroughbreds to improve their quality and performance. Because of their remarkable speed for short dashes, they make ideal cow ponies and are widely used in Western ranches as “cutting ponies.”
