Blonde brick is common in homes built in this era. I like it.

Is your home brick, as it appears, or stucco? If brick you want darker, consider staining it darker rather than painting it.

The roof/shape has a modern, almost industrial, vibe to it. But then, I'm not a pro.

With a black steel door ordered, you've already defined either your siding or your trim.

You could use gray for your siding and black for your "fascia" and window and door trim.

Just a thought: You might consider adding vertical cedar siding with a natural cedar wood finish to the entry "tower" -- above and below -- and perhaps elsewhere as well such as between the upstairs and downstairs windows on the right side (and similar places elsewhere on the home.

What a great MCM home. Whatever you do, you should try not take away from its historic integrity. That said— I think you’re on the right track with your ideas. I generally am not a fan of painting brick, but I do love dark (charcoal or black) painted midcentury homes, and it looks like your brick currently has a lot of discoloration. I think a uniform color plus landscaping is likely all you need, and the nice thing about dark-painted exteriors is that foundation plantings really pop in front of it. The driveway is great— I would focus on planting tall grasses along the foundation and drive and planting some more trees (I think you need something with height between the windows and garage area).

Having the undersides of soffits done in cedar is an interesting idea— and I think it would look good— but I’m not sure you need it, and that feels a little trendy for a house with as much MCM integrity as yours.

Have you had the brick pressure washed? That might remove some of the discoloring.

Like the wood soffit idea as well -- whether you use black or gray or something else for your siding color.

The black is stark but your home should reflect your taste. Looking at these might help you consider your options:

I would not paint the brick. It is a signature feature of the house. But the siding that is currently white could go a dark gray.

Really appreciate the feedback on the wood under the soffit. It's something that is expensive too, so if you think it can do without, I'm all for that.

One issue is the sprinklers are all on well water so there is a lot of minerals staining the house everywhere. I thought black would hide that?

Giving it some more thought: I really like the photos houssaon posted. This is something you could try out with a dark gray/charcoal and decide after doing the siding whether you want to tackle the masonry as well.

Giving a very honest reaction here: with the mock-up you posted, I’m surprised I didn’t like it as much as I would expect to. I think it has something to do with the house being alone at the top of a hill. In a denser urban environment I do think the all-black would read ‘cool’ & ‘hip urban edge’....but in your setting it kinda feels a little dark and foreboding... I think you could still go dark but maybe consider some lighter charcoal grays before paint goes up.

Don't paint the brick. It's authentic. The models ^^^^ with dark exterior look extremely gloomy. The current house is like sunshine!

As far as I can tell, those roofs are "shed" not "flat".

I like @houssaon's first photo, even the little touches like the painted cement-block walls.

I would pressure wash the house and see what it looks like super-clean.

I'm a fan of charcoal and cedar if you really want a drastic change that's pretty modern.

Not an architect, but this looks similar to a mid-century prairie style home - in Los Angeles, this house would be $$$$, as the style is in HIGH demand. I agree with the suggestions to salvage the brick. If anything, I’d maybe go dark with the trim instead. I honestly would be hesitant to add too much wood or dress the house up as something it isn’t, but that’s just me. It seems like this style is best served by taking queues from the surrounding landscape and incorporating colors and natural materials that blend in. People out here are spending tons of money to keep the features of these homes in tact wherever possible - those windows make me drool!!

Thought I would throw this out there for a little inspiration ... was perusing an architect's portfolio today and found a great example of how to really play up the awesome aspects of this type of home. @JP L: the similarities between this home and the one you posted (eaves, brick color, etc) are pretty remarkable— if I were the original poster I would honestly just use the link you posted as a guidebook for updating this home!

I'm thinking you should go to the local historical society and find the history of this house. It may have some very special origins that would be important to retain if you're freshening it up.

No matter what the realtor said about it (IME they often have NO idea about historical buildings), consider it incorrect and get verification as well as new information.

Also of note (because it kind of made me laugh) - in the link that I posted, the architect and owner actually went to great lengths to source the matching/original brick used on that house.

I actually hadn't considered how much of an impact painting the window trim a dark charcoal would have, but it made a huge difference in the look of that property (and could tie in nicely with OP's new garage door).
