Remodeling Flooring Bathrooms

seeking colorful ceramic mosaic tile for shower floor: suggestions?

Hi All,

We were going to use colorful glass hexagon tiles for our shower/bath floor, but we are getting cold feet on using glass (and or contractor is not really on board.) :) I would love to find something with a similar look in ceramic as I find that a colorful tile hides some of the grout wear and tear that tends to bug me in showers. Any tips? I know that Fireclay makes a custom blend, but we can't wait for 8-9 weeks (and the price tag is pretty steep too.) Would love other suggestions.

Not sure what you mean by colorful? Mosaic with lots of colors, a tile in one bright color or a patterned tile with several colors?

Google "encaustic look porcelain tile" and you'll get colorful tile.

chispa, thanks! I would love a mix of colors or a single color with some variation. If all else fails, a solid color (not too light) would work. :) I appreciate the idea!

Thanks for the article - just read it - very helpful tips! Considering the "cons" - the yellowing...If I don't have any sunlight (no windows) in any of the bathrooms. If it says yellows over time exposed to sunlight, guessing it's the UV, do you think it would yellow over time if there are no windows in the bathrooms, just from regular blubs? the appropriate surface...says not good for natural stones, works best with porcelain/ceramic. i'm all okay there in one bathroom. in another bathroom I'm using glass tile...it doesn't mention glass...i would guess this is okay b/c it's not a stone? what do you think? (noted to install it it may cost more than regular grout, and would need someone experienced, but can deal with that) I did quick google and looks like it also comes in colors. Oh, I like that double hex tile! Nice choice. And the linen look of the larger hex. Also a win. Well done! Nothing has been easy with Covid. Canada is behind other countries in vaccinations but we are starting to see the shipments of vaccine arrive and they are ramping up efforts. Hopefully they can follow through on getting us all vaccinated and life can return to a bit more normal. Then I can go shopping again and make my final choices for our project. Shopping online is great for gathering ideas. But I'm a touchy/feely kind of shopper. I need to see it and touch and feel it and bring it home and compare etc. That has been impossible during lockdown and we've essentially been locked down here since November. It was only just lifted last week and the case numbers are going up again. Hopefully the vaccine numbers will overtake that soon. I also like that elongated hex for your kitchen. I looked at similar but the vote here has been for subway. I don't think we've finalized anything (although my husband likely thinks we've finalized). I just wanted something a little bit different from what everyone else has been doing for years with subway tile. We'll see what happens when the counters are in - then we can take our samples to the counters and see them in the space and make a final decision. BTW, my counters are Silestone Eternal Serena. Grey background with a subtle white veining. So if we go with subway it will be white. You see why I want something different.

I believe the difference in color is too great with the white and brown. Why? 3 reasons 1. The products that are cemented to the building you will not redo anytime soon. Messy , dirty, expensive and just not worth the trouble 2. When you add a product to the building structure. Windows , floors they must last a long time. Durability, wear and tear, and STYLE. All equal a story of when the home was designed. The look over a period of time 10 years + and the home will become "out of date" Needs a face lift . 3. The homes we admire, the Museums, Churches, Libraries, Opera House have one common thread. At a glance they are timeless. Built in 1940, 1990 etc The crystal clear item is not seen For this reason I would not go "trendy". Generally our first choice is the right one. Simple and elegant How do you change this ad time moves on. Color Bedroom a change of bedspread. Bathroom towels become a dark navy or deep forest green. Yellow for spring Paint a wall blue, hang a piece of art The change is simple and your money well spent for resale Take a moment to do another board Remove the brown and replace with a neutral. Not sure this works for your application but we installed this Lunada Bay hex tile in our guest bath last fall (1" hex custom color blend, Cortona, 50% silk and 50% natural). It's pricey and probably comparable in price to Fireclay which I also love! We're thinking about installing Fireclay 8" hex tile in our primary bathroom which we're currently designing.

Deciding against glass was a smart move. It can crack and chip in high-wear areas. If you live in an area where tile shops are open, the best thing to do is go shopping in person to as many stores as you can find. Something surprising you like may stand out to you, and being on a budget, you may want to compare and compromise the look with the value. Porcelain is going to be best for wear, and most contractors would suggest a matte tile for safety in the shower floor.

Agree with Silverlined's comments.

Our Lunada hex tile is installed in our guest bathroom. We're a two-person household, no kids/pets, and we don't allow people to wear shoes in our house. That said, I vacuum almost daily with our Dyson stick vacuum and use a steam mop and haven't noticed any scratching on our tile.

I tested the sample we brought home to ensure it wouldn't scratch with our Dyson vacuum. ;-)
