Tile with hardwood? Need some stylin' help.
Comments (5)That is a lovely blue wallpaper, shanghai mom. Just gorgeous. Won't work in this room, but I would love to use it somewhere . . . Love that mirror, too. Any idea of mfg? If I go the tile route, I will be alternating the 5x5 yellow and white Rixi in either a checkerboard or perhaps even a harlequin pattern. I will be topping it like the green and yellow photograph, with the festone piece in yellow, and the chair rail piece in white. (Or perhaps substituting for the chair rail a row of 2.5x5 in white with a white pencil edge atop it to save $$.) These are the colors I need to coordinate the room with the kitchen and the dining room. I'll be doing 3 of the walls. The fourth wall, which the door opens against, I hope eventually to cover with very shallow cabinetry. Sounds like consensus is tile with hardwood is not a no-go, so that's reassuring....See MoreNeed help picking floor for kitchen, hardwood, cork or tile?
Comments (4)You mentioned that you thought about tile. I saw this floor in a magazine and knew right away that I wanted it in my newly remodeled 60 year old house. It combines tile and hardwood for a warm feeling but not the same as the rest of the house that has dark hardwoods. It was not difficult to do either. My builder and I did this one. Comments (5)I had the exact same issue. Initially they thought they could do it. But my house is old and when they did the demo they said the way they did the spacing of the supports under the wood on the older section cannot be duplicated today and the floor would never look even and the old section would always be a little higher and "squeaky". Ended up doing the whole floor. However, the hallways are old hardwood as well and the transition (via a doorway) seems fine....See MoreNeed advice about replacing kitchen hardwood with tile, open plan
Comments (8)A friend of mine had ceramic tile installed in her kitchen and has regretted it ever since. She's in her early 40's, physically fit, does a lot of walking, works full time, etc. She said it is very hard on the legs, knees, feet. Walking on hard surfaces is one thing, but standing is another. It is very different. Try standing in place on a cement surface for an hour and you will have a good idea. Ask anyone in an occupation that requires a lot of standing. It depends on how much time you spend in the kitchen, cooking, cleaning up, on whether a hard surface is a good idea....See Moresully2
