curb appeal - help me pick paint colors! add character & charm
Comments (32)I am probably too late, but I would think about a soft olive green, rather than a sage. I think the warmer tones of the olive would be nice in the shady space, and with a red door and warm white trim, along with the roof color, would be a wonderful combo! Have you considered adding simple trellises on either side of the lone window on the left? I would be nice with the cottage feel of the home, and would give some visual weight to balance the three windows on the other side. Paint the ceiling of the porch in a light blue, and change out the railings to wood ones. A charming cottage! Your current home is wonderful, and I can understand you hating to leave. But down the line, especially since remodeling is your passion, you will have something even more amazing, I am sure. For now, the cottage may feel small, but will also give you a sense of coziness and security that could be an island of peace in the storm....See MoreZero Curb Appeal-- Please Help!!!
Comments (11)Great improvement with the painted garage door and front door! If it were me, quick and dirty I'd put a pretty annual flower bed around the mailbox. Something pretty to greet me when I came home from work or running errands. And then I'd call it a day if I was a SAHM with little kids to deal with. I would probably put in a play garden/vegetable garden in the back yard but your front yard is plenty appealing. Anything else you do will be purely for your pleasure. My lowest care to pleasure plants in the yard of my last house were magic carpet spirea, Ms. Kim lilac, and a knock out rose bush. I might put a rose or lilac between the front door and garage door, to enjoy coming and going in and out of the front door. You could also put a big row of day lillies out by the road, they don't call them "ditch lilies" for nothing. All low care but pretty options. But that's just me, there are gads of other options. But anyway, your house is very appealing as is....See MoreBig Exterior Update Dilemma on Dutch Colonial House 70's
Comments (5)Yes...very nice house! I would NOT paint the brick but maybe a German smear. Paint the rest of the house a soft white or something light. I would keep the house color light due to the amount of roof exposure. To me, a lighter color will give the house more focus and not let the roof take over. Lots of color options for the door and shutters. I would not add shutters to the double windows. They're too large for properly sized shutters. I don't have a photo, but my sister has a Dutch colonial. The siding is painted a soft white and the trim and front door are Benjamin Moore's Tarrytown Green. Though not a Dutch colonial, I do have a photo of my brother's brick colonial. Tarrytown Green was also used on it. Love it with the brick and white trim....See MoreExterior of home needs character
Comments (48)I like the hip roof because it makes my house look more finished/'calm'... LOL..... I am okay with a nice gable over a front porch with hip roofs on the side. Others like gables because it creates more attic space for storage, esp. if you want to finish out the attic with a floor....other's have a theory the attic space is not as hot in the summer with gables and vents on the eaves...I have seen homes that are 20/25 feet wide on the north and 30 feet wide on the south, with hips on the sides and 3 or 4 gables on the front of various widths at the base over each room that has 3 outside walls??.... and they just make a very chunky looking house with every offset, another gabled roof of a different dimension. The less offsets on your foundation, makes for more efficient carpenter work and material use.. the same on your roofline..which the theory used to be...put more money available to spend inside the house, or less money to borrow to finish the home? I also, don't care for large windows in a garage or in the garage door. I just don't care for my car to be visible, inside my garage. And I like having that water heater closet in the garage with a circulation pump that I can turn off or on, to get water faster to the bath or kitchen areas as needed. The gas water heater, keeps my garage above freezing in winter, as my garage door is insulated. And the concrete is 2 feet high before the interior walls begins so water will not damage the wood paneling if the water heater leaks..as someone earlier here stated.....See MoreAmy Cirillo
