Oh dear. This kind of thing happens with my husband and me too. You don't want to be ungrateful, but you also want it done the "right" way! I like the different tiles that you've chosen. To me, the look is off because the rug part doesn't have a definite border. Is it possible to just cut out a small area around the rug and put in a thin tile border? If that's too much of a pain, then I agree that it should all be one kind of tile, either the pattern or the marbled rectangles -- either would look good.

I think you're right. I don't like more than 2 different tiles in a small space. Make it *your* mistake. "Oh, dear, I'm so sorry. I know I said I wanted this but I guess I didn't quite picture it..." of course, looking really guilty and sad. Maybe he can surprise you again.

Or, am I mistaken and the other flooring was already in place so he just cut out the spot under the tub for the smaller tile?)

even if it was a solid white or gray tile, the busy pattern of laying it in twos still doesn't work. if using another tile for that flooring, it needs to be larger (like 18x18 or larger) and a solid color.

well I showed him photos. I do like the tile under the tub... a lot but... I think to rip out all the other is going to be a big deal to him. he does go rogue on me but after this I dont think it will happen again. So would we rip the tile out up to the patterned tile and start from there.?

Oh my. I feel for both of you. Can you get a rug that covers a lot of the floor and let it rest for a while? When my husband and i were renovating houses, we lived through "reno years" which are like dog years. Each one can feel like 7 when things go sideways.

Live with it and a large rug. Feelings will be very different in six months.

The problem with leaving it for a while is that the patterned tile may be discontinued and that one, alone, would make it gorgeous floor. Wait a week, or two, or three, and calmly let him know that you appreciate his initiative AND you still need to remove one tile so the floor is simpler. Take on the mistake as yours for mentioning the idea of two types of tiles.

I say go ahead and PURCHASE the patterned tile that you need (can you even get the same batch?) and then LEAVE IT ALONE. Live with it. Throw down a rug.

The poor man put so much time and effort and LOVE into it. He is hurt....crushed is probably more like it that his WANT to please you has gone so HORRIBLY wrong (on your side...not his).

So long as you have the TILE...you can do whatever you want...whenever you want. Go and get the replacement tile and SIT ON IT. Do NOT make this poor soul redo anything.

It is YOUR reaction to his ACTION. His action was within his concept of what you wanted. He did his part. Now for your part. Your part, as a conscientious PARTNER (wife...husband...don't care) is to say "Thank you! Wow. What an amazing amount of work you put into this. I'm so impressed. Thank you."

And then you plan your action...which is to figure out a way to pay for this to be redone. Do this after TIME HAS PASSED. The sting of your disappointment is going to take a long time for him to get over. Give this project time to take the edge off of his resentment.

I say 10 - 12 months should just about do it. After that you plan when he's out of the house for a spell. You hire someone to come in and redo the tiles.

Right now you have a FULLY FUNCTIONAL and well installed bathroom tile job. Leave it be.

I think SJ McCarthy has the best response. I know that my family has trouble getting and doing things for me because I have a vision of what I want and don’t convey it well. And I create the same reaction you are getting. I think you should get all gooey about how great a job he did tiling, commend him on doing the surprise (cause there was some SERIOUS effort put into this surprise!) and live with it for a while. Maybe a solid blue rug would help tone down the clash in tile.

It's not ideal, but in the interests of marital harmony, I don't think it's worth tearing out. Put down a solid white rug in the main space, and try to minimize all the other small items in the room that make it look busy like the wicker basket and small rug.

The wicker basket is the hamper and I will get a big rug I have thought about that. The small rug in front of the toilet is something I personally dont care about. My husband has to have a rug there. He likes it under his feet when he uses the bathroom. I have tried so many times to get rid of it! We clash over a lot of things! Unfortunately!

A pro will cost $2 for the tile removal and $2-$4/sf for the subfloor preparation. Again, I suggest time before action.

Get the tile. That is the SINGLE MOST important thing on your list of 'how to fix this floor'. Without it you will do one of two things:

1. Live with it,

OR,

2. Rip all of it out and starting again.

Take a guess at which is going to save your relationship for the next 18 months? I'll give you a hint. It is NOT #2.

I am sorry to hear about you dilemma. Marriage involves lots of compromises, sometimes too many. I agree that changing the floor to only the patterned tile, would look best. But, on the other hand if your hubby is that distraught against ripping it up, then don’t. He did a beautiful job in his tiling. I love both of the tiles he used, and your bathroom looks lovely❣️I tend to usually get my way with home renovations, but every now and then I must compromise. The last item of our home renovation was picking out a new front door. I had my heart and soul wanting only the top third of the door with the glass window; hubby wanted the whole door to be a window. We compromised having 1/2 of the door with the glass window. Best of luck. Please let us know if he gives in to your wishes.
PS: my hubby looked at your bathroom picture and said it was a neat idea in using both tiles, but then added if you are that sick about the look, then he should change the flooring to the one tile look.

You can tuck the hamper in the tub alcove corner, so it's out of sight, still accessible, and not right next to the toilet.

I suggested a solid tile swapped into the single row that’s around the rug bc it would give your eyes a rest and because it respects and appreciates almost all of what your hubby did. I understand it’s a third tile but I don’t think that a solid reads as a busy addition. Fwiw I wish I had someone who would try to please and surprise me like that. I’m assuming you had the tile already purchased, right? He didn’t just go do this *all* on his own? So it just looks different in execution than you thought.

The tile rug pattern would look nice throughout. If you can't afford to demo the other tile than paint it with tile paint and a sealer like a glossy black or gray.

I can remember wallpapering with my husband and mother and after the first strip I got so distraught that I felt sick and couldn’t help with the rest of the dining room. So I sympathize completely, it can be so disappointing. I should have just swallowed the cost (was expensive) and also hated to tell them all their work was for nothing. I always hated it.

Your husband put a lot of work into it and I‘m sure he’s feeling disappointed as well. It’s pretty sensitive for you both right now and before making any decisions, take a breath and reconsider in a few weeks time. He will also have time to digest and probably agree it doesn't look great. In the meantime, look into costs to remove one or the other, and if tile/lot number is still available. Perhaps your husband would agree to removing to save money and hire an installer as a good compromise.

I agree both tiles are beautiful, and he tried to please you by adding the tile rug. The effect was not what you had in mind mostly because its a smallish bathroom and having too many elements can make it feel crowded. The sensible solution and a good compromise would be to make the most of it. In time you will love the story of this bathroom. My suggestion is to get rid of the small rugs (beige and gray) and replace with a light gray runner as below. Solid color similar to your walls. Also remove the basket or replace with a light color/get it out of sight. That should take care of the crowded visual and help make this bathroom the spa-like sanctuary you both envision and deserve:)

Yes, @Carla Semancik , some husbands would have watched March Madness, played basketball with his buddies, or just lounged around the house and made a mess while his wife was out of town. Lucky you, yours chose to crawl around on his hands and knees in a very small space for hours, trying to give the wife he clearly adores, the bathroom of her dreams. Flip the script, the floor is a visual representation of how much he loves you.

The runner idea does two things, breaks up the tiles and gives hubby the rug for his feet. Win, win.

Ok so the other problem which is why i set the laundry hamper there

is that he did not take the “RUG” tile completely to the wall which I dont like either.. so I set the basket there. I guess I could get a big faux plant IDK . I am annoyed by the whole thing. I can still get the tiles. But they are kind of expensive. plus I have not let him know yet I want it changed out

Once you put the runner down your eye will not see that corner:) Everytime a new bold design is constructed, the client needs a bit of time to adjust to the new look:) what you are experiencing is not different. If the corner still bothers you, you may place a towel holder or a small garbage can in that space. Your bathroom will look very nice!

It's better without the basket or anything next to the toilet. Putting anything in that location just draws your eye to it, and makes it look crowded. At least the colors of the tiles work well together. Just add a rug and some art to the walls.
