Hvac Installation-2 Stage vs Single Stage

We’re soon installing hvac in our home that currently only has baseboard heating and mini splits for AC. We have 3 levels total- basement, main, upper floor.

We‘ve decided to get 2 systems so we can avoid having vertical ductwork on the main level. We received a proposal with 2 options for all Carrier units, including for the furnace.

Option 1 has a system that is a single stage (regarding the compressor and air handler). This kicks only on and off.

Option 2 is more expensive and is a 2 stage system where the compressor can either kick on, off, or it runs partially. This system is supposed to be more energy efficient.

Option 2 is $4k more than option 1. Can anyone speak as to whether it’s worth it to spend the extra money?

A two speed AC is more energy efficient, but only slightly. Most two speed air conditioners unload the compressor in 1st stage. Most manufacturer's it's around 70% of capacity of the machine.

When 2nd stage calls, the compressor loads up to 100% of capacity.

Back when these first came out they were all the rage here because there was nothing better. But time changes things and here the better option is Inverter. The compressor in these is fully able to ramp up and down. One such model has over 50 speeds.

Some manufacturers models limit the number of speeds... many ways to do it depending on controls, what the goal is of the manufacturer. When it comes to Carrier brand the inverter realm of theirs gets into proprietary equipment controls and such. Many other manufactures are the same way. So if they stop making the controls... well that doesn't spell anything good for you if you own one.

In terms of efficiency savings? an inverter AC can cut your light bill in half.

I installed an inverter at my home in late 2019. It's not a Carrier brand.

Is an inverter AC for everyone? No. It fully depends on what comfort means to you. There are risks as with anything else.

One risk that effects everything is the new freon phase down. What happened to R22 Freon is now going to happen to R410a. By 2023 for California, other areas probably not much long after that.

Can you post the model numbers of the two quotes and prices? Are you getting gas furnaces or heat pumps?

Two stage equipment is more about comfort than energy savings. There is some energy savings but depending on your climate and usage the saving may be small. If you live in an area with high humidity in the summer, then a 2-stage AC is going to provide better humidity control. In some parts of the country, the higher SEER and EER rating may qualify for a utility or state rebate. This helps bring down the initial cost.

The overhang issue is a big one. That along with orientation can mean the difference between not using a/c or using a lot of a/c (particularly in your climate) - particularly with 96/60 and low humidity. The unusual thing about that is that traditional construction/design keeps a house cool prior to a/c. I would presume they did it with mass in adobe construction. High desert is so ideal for mass and solar design. Manual Js are somewhat complicated but going line by line you can usually make sense of them. There is usually a summary page that includes the Heat gain and losses per item - somthing like 20,000 btuh from walls, 10,000 btuh from windows. There are measurements of walls, roof/floor, window sizes. You can't ensure that the calcs are correct but you can check the inputs. The dead ringer is infiltration - find that number and see how your house is described. This is the easiest fudge factor in my mind. They often use average - go and read what average is supposed to be - it is not new house average, it is overall average. The a/c load is possibly correct. Windows to the west can let in a lot of btus. Do you have a wall of windows to the west for a view?

There are a lot of issues here and a properly done zoned system is not necessarily cheaper - there are a lot of variables. If you use a better staged system (which you would really have to do to make it acceptable), the efficiency would probably be higher. Think of it this way, $4000 per unit or $7000 for an efficient, staged larger unit. Maintenance is 50%. Advantage single unit. If you have NG, and the single unit is in the basement, it will likely be a 90%. If the second unit is in the attic, it will likely be a 80%. Advantage single unit. Conventional practice in the SE is 1 unit in basement/crawl and upstairs unit in attic. If you do a single unit, it would be in the basement. Advantage single unit (since the attic has far greater temp swings). The advantage here is on efficiency and life of the unit. Even the refrigerant runs are shorter to the basement - more efficient. Single unit outside - better use of outdoor space. Advantage single unit. I definitely don't think the answer is always 2 units are better than one. If you can be in the spec homes and try out their zoned system and it is acceptable to you (or unnoticeable), then why not? But you really want to find days that need HVAC a lot and there aren't that many in our future. But you could go and play with the stats and force it to run hard. You definitely should have stats on both floors.

Model numbers please...understand 2 stage furnaces will require a 2 stage thermostat...otherwise, you will always be going to high stage whether needed or not...totally defeats the purpose...understand 2 stage is more about comfort and marginal fuel savings...worth it?...depends on your expectations...I would want it...definitely though a high eff blower motor for single stage and preferred var speed blower motor for 2 stage furnace...

Solution to this problem. When you update your system from single stage to 2 stage, you must have C wire from outside unit. My old single stage system came with 3 wires from outside unit to indoor (blower) and Indoor unit to thermostat had 5 wires. I solve this problem with new wiring the whole house. I install 4 wires from outside unit to indoor (blower) (red(Rh), blue(C), yellow(Y1), purple (Y2) (mine had a purple)); Indoor unit to thermostat install 7 wires, which following below. red (Rh) blue (C) yellow Y1 Cooling stage-1 Gray Y2 (Purple Y2) Cooling stage-2 Green (Fan) white (W1) Heating stage-1 brown (w2) Heating stage-2 If you don't want to rewire, I recommend to get CTK04 thermostat, which will be fine with your old wiring.
