Help! This is not working out! Arranging furniture w/fireplace & TV.

We have spent HOURS on this and I'm about to give up. Our daughter is asking for help for her new home. Her fiance wants the TV on the big wall as pictured. If we do that - because of the size and the shape of the home (notice that wall that wraps around in the corner by the TV), it doesn't leave room for extra seating. We are dealing with three windows, a fireplace and the TV space.

We already have a small sofa in this photo - 81" wide. The two chairs in the photo are extremely small (26 inches wide). There isn't even room for end tables next to the sofa!

All of this is measured true to size. Notice the three windows behind the sofa.

If we put the TV in the corner between the fireplace and the window it would solve everything, but her fiance is adamant about having the TV on that wall and it is his house too!

With the wrap around wall fouling things up it is so hard to center this room.

ANY IDEAS? We appreciate any help!

The other option is to place the 2 chairs in front of windows and the sofa facing

the fireplace. He's correct, tv on that big wall would be best.

Thanks for the feedback everyone; you make good points. We will also have a TV down in our rec room in basement which is great for our two teenage sons and our 12 year old too (not as easy to supervise as you have lebwhite). We will put their X-box downstairs as well. The TV on the main level will be our second TV. Our daughter just turned 6, so we don't want her watching what the boys do most of the time (although she does get exposed to big boy TV). My husband and I very rarely watch TV (I am too addicted to GW for that LOL) and he is always working. We don't even have cable, and just rent movies on the occasion. I would say the four kids do screen time in one form or another more than I care to admit. As porkandham suggested, I will be sorry not to have the fireplace in the same room as the TV, but we are to have radiant heat, so it will be cozy everywhere! The fireplace will be used, but is also wanted for design reasons. Also, I agree that it would be nice to watch TV in the large great room, but something has to give (i.e. find a new spot) as I am not finding an easy solution to squeezing the fireplace, TV, display shelves and window seat all into the great room. Suero, thanks for the sample furniture layout that would work if we use the playroom as a TV away room. When you suggested two chairs perpendicular to the couch, were you thinking having those chairs on the side of the big window, or nearer to the entrance of the room? If we do put the TV in this smaller room, would you recommend french doors and hall door to keep the TV sound from traveling throughout house. I know the author of Not so Big House is keen on this kind of closed in away room, visable but not heard from main room especially the kitchen (see Fun2Bhere your idea is in line with a famous architect you are not the only one who sees the benefits of a separate TV room). Also I really wonder what to do about the proposed railing between the foyer and TV away room. Should we keep it as a half wall, even though the railing will make the foyer seem larger?

Thanks everyone! Sunnysmom - Thanks for the hint. I think the command hook idea would be the easiest. It’s the little things that go undone, or lead to fussing by husbands that don’t notice such things. always1 stepbehind - thank you for the compliment. I love your screen name; I can relate. I feel that I am on top of something, for once. becky and dhygarden- thanks for checking back. I ended up not going bold, except for pillows. My rug has such a “presence”. I will update again when the furniture is delivered. lindsey — haha you are right. I DID post pics of some samples. But none seemed right - they were all either too dark, too fancy, washed out, etc. I didn’t get any immediate responses so I went back to the store and got different samples. The kindly staff took an inordinate interest in my project and we found some fabrics that I think I’m going to be happy with. I really enjoyed the process. I decided to replace both wing chairs. I kinda feel bad about getting rid of them but I think the whole place will seem fresher.

i would not place over the fireplace, that is too high. you can put on an arm on the left side of the book case where the slot is for a smaller one or leave on the wall it is on, then i would give it a larger console. i think i would continue to have the sofa face the fireplace then have two swivels on the right side of the couch so they can turn to the fireplace, the tv, or the couch. i would not even ask about shelves i would quickly have them filled. if that step down gives a problem i think the least expensive solution is a slanted piece of wood shoved against it. well and glued down. if you ever want a little more color or zip, let me know can give you at the least some cool pillowsl. let me know.

Something about rectangular shapes [of windows] and several together -- fp item with irregular shape [cause it's sculptural] -- adds interest. There'd be another spot for art - the opposite wall where there's nothing right now. Maybe large canvas, and it could have contemporary vibe if it's the thing, the main thing in that area... have at it on a store-bought canvas: you with a color, and him with a color!!! ;-)

I can totally see why the TV needs to be there. It just makes it tough to figure anything else out without cutting off the open area to the kitchen. I guess I don't understand what you mean - the sofa facing the fireplace? Thanks for your help!

Hello this is the daughter! :) We appreciate your help! One thing I wanted to add is that we have not purchased any furniture yet so anything goes! If you know of pieces that would work better we would love to have your ideas! Thanks!

I like the arrangement as drawn. There may not be room for a pair of large, traditional end tables between the sofa and chairs, but you should be able to fit smaller, non-traditional tables there. We have a cute little round table that is 12-15 inches in diameter. Triangular tables might work too.

I prefer the first set up and just make sure tv wall is well balanced and interesting. Add add a large coffee, then only one side table will be needed and place a floor lamp at end near fireplace. Two single chairs facing fireplace for better conversation and so seating is not all lined up.

If space allowed and they are open to buying a sectional, see below.

Is tv too large to go over fireplace and open to that idea? They could add bookcases or cabinets to create a great focal wall. On wall facing sectional, add a console table and art.

Inspiration pictures are random decor wise but thought visuals might help in regards to concepts.

The arrangement as shown looks like it will work great. To edit it a bit, a small chair flanking the other side of the fireplace will help facilitate conversation-type seating a bit more. I wouldn't worry about having any side tables but instead focus on purchasing a longer coffee table, which can serve the same purpose.

You are all so helpful. Thank you! This is why I love this site! We are making up new drawings with these ideas (want to make sure it’s right before furniture is purchased)! I will post when it is done! If I don’t worry about cutting off the kitchen that also brings new possibilities but we will see what we come up with. It has to be usable.

I didn’t read all the contributions, I highly recommend chairs that swivel. Adds to the options.

Room below but TV and sectional reversed and sectional addition on fireplace end.

The very first layout worked fine as well; use one side table, floor lamp and larger coffee table or try chairs facing fireplace.
