Induction - here's what I have.. what do I need?
Comments (11)I can't help with induction, since I've never used it, but I can comment on woks because I do quite a bit of stir-frying. I used to swear by my Farberware non-stick wok, but after getting a BlueStar gas rangetop in my new kitchen, I decided I'd try a "real" Chinese wok, and got a carbon steel one on eBay. To my delight, after seasoning it, I discovered that it really is non-stick (well, occasionally, a bit does stick here and there, but it's rare). I can heat to a far higher temperature than I'd want to heat the non-stick version, and it cleans up easily with hot water and just a dab of detergent. Carbon steel is magnetic, and a flat-bottomed wok would sit on the cooktop surface, so that would work with induction, but would more than just the bottom of the wok get hot? With my BlueStar, I remove the burner grate and the wok sits down in the flames so both the bottom and the sides get heated. The induction units designed for stir-frying that I've seen are bowl-shaped to accomodate a wok, so I've just assumed that's what one needed, but I don't know. ---Margaret...See MoreDo you love your 30" freestanding induction range's oven?
Comments (4)I also have this induction range. Have had it about a year and a half (17 months). Love the cooktop, especially knowing that the "eyes" will go off when pots are removed. I was always worrying about leaving one on. The oven - loved it for baking until recently. My previous oven never baked at the temperature I set it for - very inconsistent. Once I got this new one, I started baking cookies, cakes, even cheescakes again. However, after using the self cleaning feature the first time, my next bundt cake burned on top. It was a cake that was to take an hour and 10 minutes to bake and after 30 minutes the top was way too dark. Yesterday, I needed to bake cookies for a funeral reception. I had just cleaned it again the day before,so I decided to use an oven thermometer to check the temperature before the first batch. It was to be set for 350 and it was closer to 400 degrees. I let the oven cool down and then set it for 325. The cookies turned out great but now I'm not so happy about the temperture issue. I did not get the extended warranty so will have to figure out if I will call for service or see if my hubs can adjust it - supposedly that may be a possibility. I don't know for sure if the issue had anything to do with using the self cleaning feature or not. Will say though, that it does do a great job of cleaning it in 3 hours. I did not need the 5 hour cycle and it had splatter from doing cornish hens the weekend before. I'm having issues with the fridge I bought at the same time so right now I can't face dealing with the oven issue. Comments (51)Hi Trisha, I understand why you come here when your in pain. I carried a burden all my life and a lot of shame. My Mother had "Huntington's Disease" and my Dad left me to take care of her when I was 11 years old. I was forced to put her in a nursing home when she was 42 years old and I was 25. I took her alone to check out the nursing home and she said "If I'm not nuts, I will be".I moved away and literally abandoned her until my brother called me home, to tell her goodbye. She was bedridden and couldn't speak but she heard my voice and responded. I didn't get any peace until she died at age 54. She came to me in a dream and wrapped her arms around me. She was young and beautiful just like she was when I was small. She loved flowers and laughter and butterflies and me. I'm told my heart is just like her's. When you live with that hanging over your head, anything else is trivial. I don't worry, it doesn't change anything. She's the reason I believe in reincarnation. I recently went through a very hard time, so bad I was banned from my step moms memorial 3 weeks ago! She'd left me her painting books and I was looking at them today. I haven't painted in probably 25 years, but I plan to start! I think you need to forgive yourself first, you were just a kid, too. Comments (3)Thanks for the encouraging and sage words. :) Skypathway1 I love to cook but am not a fancy cook. My husband is and makes tasty meals for us often. Our grown son cooks and bakes frequently as well. You re-sold me on the induction with your words, which are echoed by many here. Unfortunately I can't really pay for one. :) I wish wishing worked. :) Texas Gem I believe you will get what you planned for. You sound very level headed and practical in your approach. I did get a few things I wanted. For that I'm very happy :) I had to be practical too. Which is why I appreciate this forum so much. Many including you have waited and bided your time just as I've had to do. Much of what we have now in our kitchen is due to our concerted effort in purchasing everything gently used, including the stove, dishwashers and cupboards and counters. It took years but we finally have a truly useable if smallish, kitchen for the first time ever. I had never had a good stove or lots of space to prep and cook on. We did get the long expanses of counter and the good used fridge so this was a dream come true for our kitchen but the induction just wasn't meant to be. I liked the idea because when my adult son cooks his illness makes it hard for him to stay standing and tend the stove. He times everything and gets up and down frequently. I wished to take that burden away from him after all these years. What makes it harder is that I've been saving and planning our kitchen for years. Life and illness take their price, so reality is that there's little chance of more. We're in our late 50s and must think about when we are older, as our son continues to need extra care. Thank goodness we have made this little house accessible already because of our circumstances. so we can grow old in it comfortably and inexpensively. The kitchen is what it is going to be. :( So now I've had to accept it. Begrudgingly. Okay maybe not accept it but live with it until I do. I'm practicing faking it. How am I doing so far?
