Few pavers to cover mud

I have a section of my backyard (including right under my 4ft gate) that gets no sun, doesn't dry out and the grass isn't growing - as a result, it's fairly muddy.

I'd like to cover this small section with some simple pavers (flush to the grass so I don't trip nor my children).

What kind of pavers should one use for this? Can I get some concrete ones from home depot? If so, should they be placed touching one another? (will this result in weeds, etc)? or do they need to be spaced apart (how much, and how do you cut the grass in between)?

If I want them flush with the soil/ground, how do I do this? Do I need landscape fabric? sand? etc.

Here's a picture (blue square shows the general area where I intend to put them),
