Our living room is somewhat awkward and we are forced to put the couch in front of the railings. There is no other place for it to go.
We are doing the railings this week. We will be doing black metal railings to the one side and down the stairs. However, we are torn or whether or not we want to do the railings behind the couch or a half wall. I’m afraid that the railings may look silly from the back of the couch and them being so much taller than the couch itself. But I also don’t want to close in the space.
I am torn. What would you do?

step down from K to FR, railing, half wall, or neither?
Comments (17)The current railing will not match the new floors in the K, and I was told a it is cheaper to get a new one than to strip/stain the old one. The current style isn't great either. Katiee and pllog are right about a table in front of the railing helping define the space, but there isn't room to place anything against mine to anchor it. On the K side I have my kitchen table/chairs so it doesn't really hide the railing it just looks busy. The view from the FR is worse because there's no room for anything in front of the railing because it's next to a sliding glass door. When you're in the FR and you look into the K - you see the railing and in front of the table and chairs. I do remember the dysfunctional kitchen post, although not the bookcase, but I do understand what you mean. The storage would be great, but I don't even have 6" in the kitchen so the bookcase would be 2 " from the door. I think if I don't do the railing my options are a half wall, or just extend the step the full length of the opening. Why do I feel like I'm choosing between 3 bad options?!?...See MoreNeed Help!! Comments (3)Guess I'm not fully versed in a tri-level layout, but it sounds like I might choose a wall. That noise bouncing around always bothers me and I'd personally try to avoid it if possible. Comments (5)I'm not a big fan of the half wall look, however I can see it being nice if you don't have much wall space overall. Also, if you are already over budget that might be a place where you go with the standard walls and if you don't like it save up some money and change it a few years down the road. Comments (4)If that corner gets sunlight, you could add a large potted plant -- perhaps a rubber tree plant -- there. A lot less obstruction : ( any Auto glass shop can do it. after a template. Get them on site as to the details,,,,,,,,,,,,,,before you build more infrastructure.
