Design Dilemma living room Home Decorating

Wall decor on an awkward half wall

Hello Houzz friends,

My home is a sugar maple split. Behind the living room are the stairs leading up from the entrance. Would you put anything on this awkward wall? If so what? How big, and how would you center it? Please don’t mind the temporary living room set up. We’re in the process of new furniture, rug, etc.. once again thanks for your awesome feedback!

I'd leave that wall bare. I think it would be a bit awkward to position something properly in that space and would detract from what you've got going on elsewhere in the room.

Also.. what would you recommend should go in that right corner?

Yes -- a BIG vote for re-doing the whole door -- remove the moldings; replace the door itself with a better fitted one and invisible latches etc. Then -- paint out the full length of that wall -- and add a very long unframed modern artwork -- check out shops like Homegoods and T.J. Maxx ... OR -- add a vertical row of a set of two medium-sized artworks to add color and draw the eye up -- and away from the door/outlet ....

Oaktonmom that is a good point, but unfortunately as mentioned in my original post, the other wall opposite the fireplace is not wide enough to put a tv on, that is part of the dilemma with this space.

Another option might simply be to get rid of the bayed portion of the breakfast nook. Square it off level with the two posts on opposite walls. And then, perhaps, construct a bookshelf across the width of the nook, facing the sunroom. You could place a bench for seating on the kitchen side of it. It would eliminate the need for a railing, preserve the idea of a nook for the kitchen, and provide a functional barrier (book case) between the rooms without ruining the view.

If that corner gets sunlight, you could add a large potted plant -- perhaps a rubber tree plant -- there.

Do you have school aged child -- a reason to have one of the newer styled adult sized bean bag chairs with a swing arm wall light over it for reading/studying?

If you need a filing cabinet for your important papers, that could be a good out of the way place to put a wood one. (They can also be used as bedside tables.)
