My dog might be allergic to chicken

We've had tummy troubles and refusal to eat occasionally for a while. I switched him to a frozen beef dog food recipe, and he was doing better. I ran out of the beef and fixed some chicken and white rice which he ate but that night and next day back to rumbly tummy and won't eat. I had a similar experience when I fed him some ground turkey.

OK, we got to the pet store for more beef which I'm mixing with a little lamb kibble and a probiotic. He ate well this morning, but I still hear some light squeaking stomach noises. Maybe that's normal in digestion.

The vet said I could give him 10 mg. Pepcid which I have done. Not sure if it helps or not. I am hoping not to switch him to the food sold in the vet's office, something for sensitive stomach.

Anyone else have this chicken issue with the dog?

Thanks, Chisue, fellow Westie lover! He loves ground beef and rice. The brand of beef I’m getting (Just Food for Dogs) also offers a fish recipe so I got one of those packets too.

I’ll have to watch out for rice too apparently.

Chicken is a very popular allergen. A lot of dogs can't eat feathers at all.

OP: been there! Our Leo is on a lamb based dry dog food and is doing very well! had him on 3 different types of chicken based foods and he had diarrhea 90% of the time. he was a very sick dog :(

i did post about him about 2 years ago, more detail there.

he gets absolutely nothing with feathers!!

his treats are: his dog food, sweet potato chips (100% sweet potato) and K9 Granola Factory Crunchers, raw carrots & blueberries. all in moderation of course.

marlingardener: I'm gonna look into those feeders, I know I've seen them, just not sure on the $$....As for dogs and chickens being 'not as smart'? I'm now so sure about that.......LOL brendasue: I have to confess, I wasn't so concerned that it would 'hurt' the eggs, but I am very careful what my girls get because I like to know what goes into what I'm eating (ie: raise our own chicken (eggs) pork and beef, an older neighbor raises chickens that he slaughters and I also know what he feeds) So that was most of my concern. I don't buy the bottom of the barrel dog food, but I am a realist and am fairly certain that I don't want to eat it...........Thanks for the answers..............T

I am a person who has been tested for allergies. I am allergic to cat dander but not to dogs. I had to give away my kitten, thus no more ear infections, sore throats, or eye infections and finally landing in hospital. I am now the proud owner of a dog. I am a very happy camper now. Do not know the difference in cat dander or dog dander but there is a difference, as I have had my dog for awhile now and no problemos. When I had my kitten, I was sick constantly,(ALL THE TIME) thus my Dr. suggested I have some allergy tests done to find out what was going on with me, came back it was my kitty. I was in denial even after test came back until I ended up in hospital with an ear and throat infection so bad it set up a bacterial infection. I had to have my house professional cleaned twice before I could move back in, I was so sick from the kitten. I understand your daughter. I avoid cats and will not even go in a house where there is one.

What flea control product are your cats on, and how often do you apply it? You almost NEVER see fleas on a cat, even if they are infested, because they scratch them off or chew them off so quickly. But it's still enough to cause severe allergies. The cheapest and easiest way to rule out flea allergies is to do maintain absolute flea control. You could also manage the cat with cyclosporin instead of steroids. Much less long term side effects, such as making your cat diabetic. Allergy testing is available, but the cat must be off steroids for several weeks. It is expensive at $120, then if you start immunotherapy shots the medication is $120 for about 6 months worth. Not all cats respond to the immunotherapy, but you have to keep it up for a year before deciding that your pet didn't respond. If you aren't going to do immunotherapy there is really no reason to do allergy testing. Allergy testing does not test for food allergies, and you can't control environmental allergens, so there really isn't a point if you aren't going to use the immunotherapy. The only way to test for food allergies to do a strict limited ingredient trial. Your cat cannot have eaten ANY ingredients in the new food ever before, or the diet trial will not work. It doesn't have to be a prescription diet, but if there is any possibility that your cat could eat another non-food-trial food, then the food trial won't work. Either have to feed all the cats the same diet, or somehow restrict the allergic cat from getting to any other food. I would also consider that your cat has something else besides allergies, or in addition to allergies, causing him not to respond well to the cortisone. Until you find a vet willing to put in the time and effort to properly diagnose your cat, it is going to be impossible to get him treated. Good luck.

My coating did remain solid (and fluffy) and the hot dog did not shrink, as far as I could tell. I might try baking them in cornbread, but if I do, I will use my own cornbread recipe and maybe add jalapeños to it. I may have to get a corn stick pan for this. I will try grinding my corn finer, but I will keep my cornmeal to flour ratio and see if the finer grind will get the results I want. When I make cornbread, it has no flour in it whatsoever - that is the traditional Texas style, and it's what I'm used to. I also use zero sugar in it. Adding dry mustard sounds like a good idea. When I make the next batch, I can fry a couple of them and then decide whether the batter needs to have more flour added to it. I fry them in a wok, and I can only get two in at a time anyway. I got rid of my deep fryer, as it did not maintain the temperature that it was supposed to, and now I have a very good frying thermometer, plus a wok adapter for my range that locks in place and holds the wok perfectly. I will probably try Applegate's turkey hot dogs next. I prefer to avoid "all beef", and I was interested in trying something with a mixture of beef and pork. If I were just making hot dogs, I might go back to Hebrew National, but for corndogs, I think they might come out a bit dry. The chicken corndogs were not dry and my only complaint is the flavor of the hot dogs.

Thanks, sprt. That looks very good. I'm supplementing the beef with Blue Buffalo lamb. I notice both Verus and BB have chicken fat but I guess its not enough to bother tummies. I'll keep the Verus in mind.

It may or may not be the chicken. It could also be the rice or any other thing that you may have added. I am allergic to rice, tested and confirmed. I can eat a small amount but have problems if I eat more than that. You could see if plain chicken causes the problem then work from there.

Just a suggestion but both Chewy and Amazon do ship prescription diet food. I recently ordered cat KD from Chewy. You make the order. When checking out they will ask for the name of your clinic or the zip code where it is located. It took 24 hours for the vet office to give the OK so do not expect it to be instantaneous if you need to go this route. When my baby was first diagnosed a couple of months ago Amazon and Chewy had the food for about the same price as the vet. However when I went to order because the vet's office was low on supplies there was only one vendor on Amazon who was price gouging. Some of the other places like Petsmart also can provide shipments of prescription diets.

My dog is extremely allergic to rice...so, rice is not necessarily OK although it sounds like it should be. Through process of elimination, I figured out the issue was rice...it took ages though.

socks -- When they got to be seniors or had stomach upset, we fed Pip and Eliot cooked ground beef and rice. Eliot was also on a 'sensitive stomach' canned food that I ordered from Chewy. (Don't recall name.) A fellow Westie owner fed her dog all kinds of fish (expensive)!

Not with a dog, but if DD got any minute amount of poultry, several hours and one meal later, she would start throwing up, and continue for four hours. Usually the vomiting would start in the wee hours, and I would immediately start washing her sheets. B the time she went through all my extra sets of sheets, the first set would be out of the dryer and ready to put on her bed. This poultry allergy showed up when she was a baby and we were starting her on foods. Finally, when she was about 22 and in college, she accidentally got some poultry and was fine, and she still can eat poultry. And yes, she did not want to eat anything for the rest of the day if she did eat an poultry or broth.

It seems like lots of Westies might be in the same category with sensitive stomachs. My clients Westie is allergic to everything besides beef sweet potato and rice. Go figure! Anyway just wanted to say you just never know. Good luck with your Westie.

One of my dogs tested positive for IBD. My next step was to do a food sensitivities test through 5 strands to help us select the right food with the vets assistance. Turns out our dog is sensitive to most all protein sources except for duck and lamb.

Jasdip is right. If a bag says "chicken by products" that could well be feathers, among other parts. I would try him on some plain boiled chicken and see how he reacts.

Gosh the dog beef sounds yummy. I just cooked some of the same ground beef we ate. Maybe that wasn't so great for all the extra nutirents, but both lived into their late teens. Chewey was much cheaper than our vet for the special canned foods. (Not thrilled with the recipe containing white potatoes; I can rarely eat a baked potato without indigestion -- something new in my old age.)
